Explainer: What might be blacked out of Mueller's Trump-Russia report?

Explainer: What might be blacked out of Mueller's Trump-Russia report? While congressional Democrats have demanded the release of the full report with nothing blacked out, as well as the underlying evidence Mueller collected, Barr has said he will redact four categories of sensitive information. According to a March 24 letter Barr sent to lawmakers, Mueller’s nearly 400-page report presents evidence on both sides of the question of whether Trump engaged in obstruction of justice, and while it “does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.” Barr said in his letter that Mueller did not establish that the Trump campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Russia. Barr also said that he as attorney general concluded that Mueller’s evidence was “not sufficient” to establish that Trump committed criminal obstruction of justice.

Factbox: Five things to look for in Mueller's Trump-Russia report

Factbox: Five things to look for in Mueller's Trump-Russia reportBarr on March 24 sent a four-page letter to lawmakers detailing Mueller’s “principal conclusions” including that the 22-month probe did not establish that President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team conspired with Russia. Barr said he found insufficient evidence in Mueller’s report to conclude that Trump committed obstruction of justice, though the special counsel did not make a formal finding one way or the other on that. Perhaps the biggest political risk for Trump is the special counsel’s supporting evidence behind Mueller’s assertion that while the report does not conclude the Republican president committed the crime of obstruction of justice it “also does not exonerate him” on that point.

Robert Mueller report: Democrats aim to pursue Trump-Russia investigations regardless of Mueller's conclusionsDemocrats have yet to see details of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on President Donald Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 election, but are insisting they will press ahead with their investigations no matter what the conclusions. Separately, six committee chairs said they would proceed with enquiries into whether Mr Trump obstructed justice or abused the powers of his office.

Robert Mueller report: Democrats say they are prepared to battle for access to full contents of Trump-Russia probeHouse Democrats, concerned president Donald Trump‘s attorney general may withhold evidence of wrongdoing uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller, are preparing for potential battle over access to the full contents of Mr Mueller’s newly completed report, vowing to pursue it and any underlying investigative materials in court if necessary. “We will fight” for the full report, said representative Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, emphasising that Democrats expect complete transparency from Mr Mueller and the Justice Department, save for redactions of classified information that could jeopardise sensitive law enforcement methods if disclosed publicly. Attorney general William Barr informed the heads of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees in a letter on Friday he might be able to advise them of Mr Mueller’s “principal conclusions as soon as this weekend”.

Turn in your smartphones! How Mueller kept a lid on Trump-Russia probeOperating in secrecy in a nondescript glass-and-concrete office, the team of prosecutors and investigators since May 2017 has unearthed secrets that have led to bombshell charges against several of President Donald Trump’s aides, including his former national security adviser, campaign chairman and personal lawyer, who have pleaded guilty or been convicted by a jury. To protect those secrets from prying ears, the whole of the office suite in southwest Washington has been designated a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), U.S. spy speak for an area that has restrictions to ensure secret information stays secure.
