Thomas D’Alesandro III, a former mayor of Baltimore and the brother of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, died Sunday at 90. The Baltimore Sun reported D’Alesandro died in his North Baltimore home of complications from a stroke. Affectionately called “Young Tommy,” D’Alesandro served as Baltimore’s mayor for one term, from 1967 to 1971.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday debated the insanity defense in criminal prosecutions and delivered a potential setback to gun control advocates as it opened its new term on Monday with a flurry of activity on a day when its longest-serving justice, Clarence Thomas, was absent due to illness. The conservative-majority court returned after a three-month break to launch its new nine-month term with arguments in a trio of cases. The court hears the term’s first major case on Tuesday on whether a landmark federal anti-discrimination law that bars sex discrimination in the workplace protects gay and transgender employees.

Mexico braces for impact as Thomas Cook collapses
Cancún (Mexico) (AFP) – Mexico is bracing for a “very powerful” impact from the collapse of British travel firm Thomas Cook, an official said Monday, as several hundred tourists gathered at the Cancun airport looking for a way home. Britain sends more tourists to Mexico’s Caribbean coast than any other European country, and more than any country in the world except the United States and Canada, according to Mexican tourism ministry figures.

It was the spark.How far have we LGBT people come since 1969?Since 1969 we’ve come out of the shadows of shame and intolerance. In 50 years the LGBTQ community is a force to be reckon with, but we still have battles ahead. And it’s not solely on LGBTQ rights. We need to show up wherever people are marginalized and oppressed. We need to show up when we aren’t personally the sole beneficiaries.What would you like to see, LGBT-wise, in the next 50 years?I’d love to see an LGBTQ President. And I believe in my lifetime we just might. But in the meantime I want LGBTQ kids to know it’s OK. It’s OK to be different. It’s OK to be gay.
