Tent courts set to open on border for US asylum seekers

Tent courts set to open on border for US asylum seekersThe Trump administration is ready to open a tent court on the border to help handle tens of thousands of cases of asylum seekers forced to wait in Mexico, with hearings held entirely by videoconference. The administration introduced its “Remain in Mexico” policy in San Diego in January and later expanded it to El Paso, but hearings there are conducted inside large buildings with normal courtrooms, and the judge usually appears in person. The policy, assailed by critics for making families and young children wait in violent Mexico border cities, has become a key piece of the U.S. response to a large increase in asylum-seeking families, especially from Central America.

Detaining children in tent cities costs more than double than keeping them with their families, reveals report

Detaining children in tent cities costs more than double than keeping them with their families, reveals reportIt costs more than double the amount to detain children separated from their families at the US-Mexico border in tent cities than keeping the whole family together, a new report has revealed. It costs $ 775 (£586) per night, per child, to be detained in the new tent cities facilities, NBC News reported, citing Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials. The higher costs for the newly-separated children are due to new construction of these tent cities, air conditioning for the facilities, certified medical workers, labour for the facilities, food, water, and other supplies which had to be procured quickly.

Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrant

Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrantA bear crashed a camper's tent which ultimately led to her arrest.  A woman camping in Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska, was rudely awakened by a bear on Tuesday. Police received a phone call from a concerned citizen at approximately 7:30 a.m., claiming that a bear had crashed a tent, possibly with a person inside, the Associated Press
reports. SEE ALSO: Angry bear charging a car is a good reminder to leave bears alone When the cops showed up, the bear was gone, and no one responded when they called out for anyone inside the downed tent. However, when police poked a sleeping bag inside the tent, 58-year-old Christine Chalp popped her head out. Chalp claims that she played dead in order to evade the bear. Unfortunately, a bear nearly eating your face is not a good enough excuse to avoid a ticket — or arrest. Police issued Chalp a citation for feeding game after they discovered food and trash around her campsite, which is illegal because it attracts large game such as moose.  Oh, yeah, and bears. While issuing the citation, the police discovered that Chalp had a warrant out for her arrest on a misdemeanor failure-to-appear for disorderly conduct, so she was arrested.  So basically, this bear blew up her spot which ultimately led to a citation and an arrest. ‘I am a child of refugees’: New Yorkers stage tent protest of Trump travel ban

‘I am a child of refugees’: New Yorkers stage tent protest of Trump travel banTrump’s initial travel ban was met with a swift backlash and stymied by the courts. “We’re spending just one night here and we can always go inside if we get cold, if we get wet, but refugees don’t have that option available to them,” said Amaha Kassa, executive director of African Communities Together, as rain began to beat down on the makeshift tent city. “Trump’s executive orders are going to cut the heart out of these programs,” said Kassa, who came to the U.S. from Ethiopia at age 4 as an asylum seeker.
