Friends raised the alarm after being unable to reach Aroubeh Barakat and her daughter Halla Barakat by telephone for two days, the Dogan and Anadolu news agencies said. Turkish police then arrived at their apartment in the Uskudar district on the Asian side of Istanbul and found both women dead.

Russia threatens to retaliate against US forces in SyriaThe country’s defence ministry said Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias fighting, had taken up positions on the eastern banks of the Euphrates alongside US special forces. The SDF had twice opened fire with mortars and artillery on Syrian troops who were working alongside Russian special forces, it claimed. Moscow also claimed that the SDF had diverted from the battle to take the northern city Raqqa to the province of Deir al-Zor, around 100 miles to the east, where Russian special forces are helping the Syrian army push out Isis militants.
