China Formally Arrests Australian Writer on Suspicion of Spying

China Formally Arrests Australian Writer on Suspicion of Spying(Bloomberg) — An Australian writer detained in China seven months ago has been formally arrested on suspicion of espionage, triggering swift demands from the government in Canberra that he be allowed to return home.Foreign Minister Marise Payne said she was “concerned and disappointed” that Yang Hengjun, a Chinese native who’s now an Australian citizen, would “continue to be criminally detained.” He is one of several detained foreign nationals whose cases have raised concerns about operating on the mainland. Two Canadians — Michael Kovrig, a Hong Kong-based security analyst on leave from Canada’s foreign service, and entrepreneur Michael Spavor — were detained in December and later accused of espionage. “It is important, and we expect, that basic standards of justice and procedural fairness are met,” Payne said in a statement Tuesday. “I respectfully reiterate my previous requests that if Dr. Yang is being held for his political beliefs, he should be released.”Yang was detained in the southern city of Guangzhou in January after a flight from New York. His lawyer Rob Stary told the Australian newspaper Tuesday that the precise nature of the espionage allegations weren’t clear, though apparently relate to his “democracy activism.”China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. At the time of his detention, the Foreign Ministry in Beijing said Yang was being investigated for “criminal activities endangering national security.” Yang previously was a Chinese foreign affairs official in Beijing, before becoming an Australian citizen and novelist, the Australian newspaper reported earlier this year.Payne said Yang had been held in “harsh conditions” without charge and denied access to lawyers or his family. She said she had discussed the issue twice with her Chinese counterpart and written to him three times raising her concerns.Yang has been visited by embassy officials seven times since his detention and a visit is scheduled for today, she said.“I will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of Dr. Yang to ensure a satisfactory explanation of the basis for his arrest, that he is treated humanely and that he is allowed to return home,” Payne said.(Updates with details of other foreigners detained in second paragraph)To contact the reporter on this story: Edward Johnson in Sydney at ejohnson28@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Edward Johnson at ejohnson28@bloomberg.net, Peter VercoeFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

British couple arrested on suspicion of smuggling cocaine on board cruise liner

British couple arrested on suspicion of smuggling cocaine on board cruise linerTwo British nationals have been arrested on the holiday island of Madeira on suspicion of smuggling £2 million pounds worth of cocaine aboard a luxury cruise liner. The pair, were amongst 12 people, who were detained when the cruise ship, the MSC Opera, docked at Funchal en route from the Caribbean on March 24. Local police assisted by members of Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) recovered around 18 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value of £2 million. The cocaine had been hidden in crisp packets and ceramic bowls which had been stashed in suitcases. Six of those arrested had been passengers on board the vessel when it travelled from the West Indies to Madeira.  The other six, including the two Britons, and a Dutch national who lives in London, had  recently travelled to Madeira, where it is suspected they were due to meet the ship when it docked. The drugs had been stored in crisp packets Those arrested were aged between 20 and 52 and included six men and six women. All twelve have been detained pending prosecution in the Portuguese courts. Allan Round, NCA operations manager at the Joint Border Intelligence Unit, said:“We believe this operation will have seriously disrupted an organised crime group looking to traffic cocaine into the UK and Europe. The drugs had been hidden in bowls “Working with our Portuguese colleagues we have been able to act on intelligence at speed and prevent this quantity of drugs from reaching its final destination. “Once in the UK we know cocaine generates huge profits for criminal networks who are also involved in street violence and exploitation, so stopping it will help reduce the harm caused by them.” The Joint Border Intelligence Unit combines staff from the NCA, Border Force and other law enforcement to share intelligence and pursue and disrupt those who attempt to evade UK border controls for criminal purposes.

Six Syrian men arrested across Germany on suspicion of Isil 'Christmas market' plot

Six Syrian men arrested across Germany on suspicion of Isil 'Christmas market' plotSix Syrian men were arrested in raids across Germany on Tuesday morning on suspicion of planning a terror attack on behalf of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil). According to unconfirmed reports, the target of the planned attack was a traditional Christmas market which opens in the western city of Essen next week. The men all entered Germany as asylum seekers, and are believed to have known each other in Syria before travelling to Europe. Authorities were alerted to the suspects by other asylum seekers who recognised them as jihadists who had fought for Isil in Syria, Welt newspaper reported. Officials have yet to comment on the target of the planned attack. A statement by prosecutors said the men were “planning an attack with weapons or explosives on a public target in Germany”.  The scene of carnage after a truck ploughed through the Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin in December 2016 Credit: EPA The plot had not yet advanced beyond the planning stage, prosecutors said. The arrested men are aged between 20 and 28. Four of them entered Germany as asylum seekers in September 2014, before Angela Merkel opened the country’s borders in her controversial refugee policy, while the other two arrived in 2015. The arrests come 11 months after Anis Amri, a rejected Tunisian asylum-seeker, killed 12 people and injured more than 50 when he drove a stolen lorry into a packed Christmas market in Berlin. Germany recent terror attacks Cities across Germany have ordered new security measures for Christmas markets this year, including concrete bollards to prevent a repeat of the lorry attack. Details of the new plot were not clear on Tuesday morning, but it appears from prosecutors’ statements the arrested men were planning to use a different means of attack. The suspects were held in a series of coordinated raids in the cities of Essen, Kassel, Hannover and Leipzig. More than 500 police officers took part in the operation.

Bagel family's son arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother and sister in north London home

Bagel family's son arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother and sister in north London homeThe son from a world renown London family-run bagel firm has been arrested over the double murders of his mother and sister at their £1.5m home. Joshua Cohen, 27, was found in a north London park after officers launched a manhunt following the discovery of the bodies of his mother, named locally as Leah, 66, and sister Hannah, 33, at the family's home in Golders Green. The pair had been stabbed to death in what police have described as "a devastating attack". Detectives were called at 8.50pm on Friday night to reports two women had been seriously injured and pronounced them dead at the scene. Hannah Cohen, 33, was found stabbed to death with her mother in Golders Green, north London. The family run the world renown Beigel Bake in Brick Lane, London, which was set up by Mr Cohen's late father Asher with his brother and another partner in 1974 and was first Britain's first bagel bakery. Mr Cohen had worked in the family business, which is now predominantly run by his brothers. A family friend told the Telegraph: "I find it it quite shocking what's happened. Josh used to come and go but it was mostly his brothers Nathan and Daniel who worked there." On his Facebook page Mr Cohen lists his last employment had been at a Costa Coffee store. Detectives said Mr Cohen has mental health issues and suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. "It's absolutely sickening, the police presence afterwards was crazy so I knew something really serious had happened," Following a police appear, a member of the public reported seeing Mr Cohen in Golders Hill Park, north west London, yesterday afternoon. Detectives arrested him shortly afterwards and he is presently at a north London police station undergoing questioning. Detective Inspector Ian Lott from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "Following a recent media appeal a discerning member of the public alerted police to a real time sighting and officers moved quickly to detain and arrest the man wanted for questioning shortly before 2pm. "I know of his mum and sister, the family were very private. "I knew them to say hello to but not well.   "His mum was disabled, mentally and psychically and she had a lot of help at the house.  "I've spoken to Josh and sat on the wall and had a cigarette with him – it was that type of relationship.  "I last saw Josh on Friday night when I was coming back from Sainsbury's. He crossing the road.  "He was wearing a big red hooded fleece with a logo on it and grey tracksuit bottoms and was heading towards the tube station."  Forensics the house in Golders Green Crescent at the scene of a double murder. Staff at Beigel Bake were too upset to talk last night. Mr Cohen senior, who died in December aged 81, arrived in the UK from Israel in the 1960s and worked at his brother's bakery next door initially before branching out and opening his bagel business. Beigel Bake, famed for its salted beef bagel, started out as a wholesale business and almost everything was made by hand in traditional Jewish style. It remains a 24 hour bakery and produces 7,000 bagels everyday.
