Five people, including three babies, stabbed at New York daycare centre

Five people, including three babies, stabbed at New York daycare centreThree babies and two adults were slashed during an early-morning assault at a suspected illegal childcare centre in New York City on Friday, police said. A 52-year-old woman who works there as a "babysitter/worker" was arrested after assault which took place in the Queens neighborhood at around 3:30am, a police spokesman told AFP. The suspect attacked two baby girls and a baby boy, leaving one of the girls in serious condition, police said. One of the adults hurt in the attack worked there, while the other was the father of one of the babies. None of the victims' lives were in danger, police said. Officers found the suspect in the basement of the center with self-inflicted cuts to her wrists. She has not yet been charged. "It looks to be an illegal" childcare facility, apparently for members of the city's Asian community, the police spokesman told AFP. "We're unsure of its legality at this time." It was not immediately clear how many other children were at the centre at the time of the assault.

Brazil's far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro stabbed during campaign event

Brazil's far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro stabbed during campaign eventJair Bolsonaro, Brazil's front-running far-right presidential candidate, underwent emergency surgery on Thursday after he was stabbed during a campaign event. The 63-year-old lawmaker has "a wound in the abdomen that has been caused by a sharp instrument," said the Santa Casa hospital in the southeastern city of Juiz de Fora, describing his condition as "stable." In a press conference after the surgery, doctors said the lawmaker had "three serious bowel perforations" that caused internal bleeding, adding that they had performed a colostomy and he was now stable. Earlier, one of the candidate's sons, Flavio Bolsonaro, had announced on Twitter that his father's wounds were "superficial", but he later wrote: "Unfortunately, it's more serious than we thought." "The perforation reached part of his liver, lung and intestine," Flavio Bolsonaro wrote. "He lost a lot of blood, arrived at the hospital … almost dead. He appears to have stabilised now. Please pray!" "I just want to send a message to the thugs who tried to ruin the life of a family man, a guy who is the hope for millions of Brazilians: You just elected him president. He will win in the first round," said Flavio Bolsonaro. Images shared on social media and Brazilian television showed Mr Bolsonaro being carried on the shoulders of a throng of supporters, before a man lunges at his stomach. A military police spokesman told AFP a 40-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the assault. The suspect was carrying a knife wrapped in fabric, the spokesman said. The suspect was a former activist of a far-left political party. Social media footage showed the apparent attacker being grabbed by several Bolsonaro supporters before the video cuts out.  In this video still provided by Fernando Goncalves, National Social Liberal Party presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro is carried away after being stabbed  Credit: AP Sometimes described as Brazil's Donald Trump, Mr Bolsonaro has a huge social media following of 8.5 million people. The attack pushes an already chaotic campaign into further disarray.  Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato, who operated on the candidate, said it could take two months for him to fully recover and he will spend at least a week in the hospital. "His internal wounds were grave and put the patient's life at risk," Dr Borsato said, adding that a serious challenge now would be preventing an infection that could be caused by the perforation of Bolsonaro's intestines. Bolsonaro, who has spent nearly three decades in Congress, is a law-and-order candidate who routinely says that Brazilian police should kill suspected drug traffickers and other criminals at will. His trademark pose at rallies is a "guns up" gesture with both hands to make them resemble pistols. Jair Bolsonaro: Hard-Right frontrunner dubbed 'Trump of the Tropics' He has openly praised Brazil's military dictatorship and in the past said it should have killed more people. Mr Bolsonaro faces trial before the Supreme Court for speech that prosecutors said incited hate and rape. He has called the charges politically motivated. President Michel Temer quickly condemned the attack and instructed his Minister of Security Raul Jungmann to reinforce security for candidates and conduct "a rigorous investigation," a spokesman for the presidency told AFP. "It is intolerable to see that in a democratic state it is not possible to have a normal campaign," Mr Temer said. Jair Bolsonaro is taken on the shoulders of a supporter moments before being stabbed Credit: Antonio Scorza Fernando Haddad, who will likely be the leftist Workers Party presidential candidate, said the stabbing was a "shame" and a "horror." Presidential rival Ciro Gomes also expressed outrage at the political violence. A few people gathered outside the hospital where Mr Bolsonaro was treated Thursday night where the scene was calm. Bruno Engler, 21, who is running for a Minas Gerais state congressional seat for Mr Bolsonaro's Social Liberal Party, was pacing outside the hospital with a few other Bolsonaro supporters. He said if he could, he would lynch the suspect police have in custody. "They call us on the right the intolerant, the violent ones, but those who are intolerant and violent are them," Engler said, referring to leftist voters. Brazilian President Michel Temer Credit: EVARISTO SA/AFP Next month's election is the most unpredictable since Brazil's return to democracy three decades ago. Political corruption investigations have jailed scores of powerful businessmen, politicians and alienated voters who are infuriated with their representatives. With jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ruled out of the October 7 election, the latest polls from the Ibope Institute put Mr Bolsonaro in a clear lead with 22 percent compared with 12 percent each for environmentalist Marina Silva and center-left runner Ciro Gomes. Under Brazilian campaign laws, Mr Bolsonaro's tiny coalition has almost no campaign time on government-regulated candidate ad blocs on TV and radio. That means he relies deeply on social media and raucous rallies around the country to drum up support. If Mr Bolsonaro is not able to go out in the streets, it could jeopardise his campaign.

Two US citizens stabbed in possible terror attack at Amsterdam station

Two US citizens stabbed in possible terror attack at Amsterdam stationTwo bystanders who were seriously injured in a knife attack at Amsterdam's Central Station are US citizens, the US ambassador said Saturday. "We are aware that both victims were US citizens and have been in touch with them and their families," Pete Hoekstra said in a statement. Police shot and wounded a 19-year-old Afghan man with a German residency permit. He stabbed the two people at the Dutch capital's busy station in the city centre on Friday. "We are seriously taking into account that there was a terrorist motive," Amsterdam police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told AFP. Earlier witnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out and thousands of commuters and tourists were evacuated from the rail terminus shortly after midday on Friday.  "A man in the west side tunnel of Amsterdam Central Station stabbed two other people and directly after that he was shot by the police," another police spokesman Rob van der Veen said, adding terrorism was not being ruled out by investigators. Security official stands guard outside Amsterdam's main railway station. Credit: Remko De Waal/AFP "The two people are very badly injured, and they were brought to the hospital," he said. "We are looking at all scenarios, also the worst scenario, which is terrorism." One witness said he saw a young man "stumble" into his flower shop at the station with a bleeding wound to his hand. "Shortly afterwards I heard some shots and I know something has gone badly wrong," Richard Snelders told the ANP news agency. A while later he saw another man lying on the ground nearby, he said. "The first thing that comes up in your mind is that it's a terror attack. After all, you are at Amsterdam Central Station. There was a lot of panic," Snelders said. Police quickly arrived at the scene with video images showing police ordering the suspect in English to "stay down" after he had been shot. Images posted on social media showed security guards ushering passengers towards exits and paramedics arriving at the scene with stretchers. Police spokesman Zuiderhoek said the knifeman's condition was not life-threatening, but that he had been shot in the lower body. "At this moment he is under police custody in hospital. He is being questioned about his motive," Zuiderhoek added. Profile | Geert Wilders Dutch police were also in close contact with their German counterparts in regards to the suspect's background, he added. Two platforms at the station – located in the Dutch capital's historic canal-ringed city centre – had been evacuated and closed off to passengers, police said, and were reopened for rail traffic two hours later. A special police department opened a routine probe into why police shot the man. The Netherlands has so far been spared from the slew of terror attacks which have rocked its closest European neighbours in the past few years. But amid a number of scares and reports that people linked to some of those attacks may have crossed briefly into the country, top Dutch security and intelligence officials have stressed that the threat level is substantial. Police declined to speculate on the reasons for Friday's incident, but the Afghan Taliban in a statement Thursday called for attacks on Dutch troops following plans by Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders to stage a Prophet Mohammed cartoon competition in the Dutch parliament. Wilders, who received several death threats has since cancelled the competition which has angered Muslims and sparked protests, saying he wanted to "avoid the risk of making people victims of Islamist violence". Around 250,000 people travel through Central Station every day, according to statistics provided by the Amsterdam.info travel guide.
