Bolivia says Spain 'tried to extract' wanted aide from Mexico embassy

Bolivia says Spain 'tried to extract' wanted aide from Mexico embassyBolivia on Saturday accused Spain of an abortive attempt to extract a wanted former government aide from Mexico’s embassy in La Paz, prompting a sharp denial from Madrid. It was the latest twist in a murky incident Friday involving embassy personnel in the Bolivian capital that has sparked a bitter diplomatic spat. Several hours later, Bolivia’s top diplomat accused Spanish embassy staff of trying to infiltrate the Mexican mission with a group of masked men in what it said was a violation of Bolivian sovereignty.

Spain pulled into diplomatic spat between Bolivia, Mexico

Spain pulled into diplomatic spat between Bolivia, MexicoA tense diplomatic feud between Bolivia’s conservative interim government and Mexico expanded to include Spain on Friday when a confrontation broke out as Spanish diplomats visited the Mexican ambassador’s residence in La Paz, where members of the ousted leftist government have taken refuge. Bolivian Foreign Minister Karen Longaric complained that Spanish diplomats were accompanied by masked and armed men on a visit to the residence, calling that an abuse of Bolivia’s sovereignty. The interim government already has been feuding with Mexico, which not only gave refuge to the nine, but also sheltered ousted leader Evo Morales when he resigned the presidency on Nov. 10 after losing the support of the military and police following days of turbulent protests over alleged fraud in his reelection bid.

Spain will exhume dictator Francisco Franco's remains on Thursday

Spain will exhume dictator Francisco Franco's remains on ThursdaySpain will on Thursday remove the 1.5-tonne slab which has covered the tomb of dictator Francisco Franco for the past 44 years and fly his remains by helicopter away from a state mausoleum, government sources told reporters on Monday. The ruling Socialists have long sought to exhume Franco’s remains and turn the Valley of the Fallen complex near the capital Madrid into a memorial to the 500,000 people who were killed during the 1936-39 civil war he unleashed. A crane will lift the slab and, if the original zinc-lined wood coffin is too degraded, the dictator’s remains will be transferred into a new coffin, the sources said.

Spain Minister Attacks ‘Totalitarianism’ of Catalan Separatists

Spain Minister Attacks ‘Totalitarianism’ of Catalan Separatists(Bloomberg) — Josep Borrell, Spain’s acting foreign minister, accused Catalan separatist leaders of acting in a “totalitarian” way as protests continued at the jailing of former officials who plotted a bid for independence in 2017.When Catalonia’s secessionist president, Joaquim Torra, claims to be speaking for all Catalans, that comes close to a totalitarian attitude, Borrell, who was born in the region, told reporters Tuesday. “The root of the problem is that the independence movement ignores the ‘Catalanness’ of those people who aren’t in favor of independence,” he said.Borrell, who himself is Catalan, spoke as protests continued against Supreme Court verdicts on Monday that sentenced nine separatist leaders to a combined 100 years in jail, including a 13-year term for Oriol Junqueras, the region’s former vice president. The judgments relate to an illegal bid by the former Catalan government to declare independence from Spain two years ago. While separatist parties have a slim majority in the Catalan parliament, polls show support for independence is shared by less than half the population.Protests on Tuesday lacked the intensity of events Monday when crowds blocked roads and laid siege to Barcelona airport. Even so, protesters clashed with police on Tuesday evening in Barcelona and the cities of Tarragona and Girona, La Vanguardia reported. A crowd of as many as 40,000 gathered in Barcelona, the newspaper said, citing police estimates. To contact the reporter on this story: Charles Penty in Madrid at cpenty@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Chad Thomas at cthomas16@bloomberg.net, Robert JamesonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

Spain sends navy to save migrants as Italian justice intervenes

Spain sends navy to save migrants as Italian justice intervenesSpain on Tuesday deployed a naval patrol boat to pick up migrants on a charity rescue boat that has been stranded off Italy’s Lampedusa island for days after numerous people jumped overboard in a desperate bid to swim ashore. Prosecutor Luigi Patronaggio also ordered the Open Arms charity vessel preventatively seized after inspecting the Spanish boat on which migrants have spent 19 days and “given the difficult situation on board”, a judicial source said. Against the backdrop of a major political crisis in Italy, Patronaggio intervened as part of his probe into alleged kidnapping and refusing to obey orders targeting far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
