Neil Gorsuch fears 'massive social upheaval' if Supreme Court rules in favor of civil rights protections for LGBTQ workers

Neil Gorsuch fears 'massive social upheaval' if Supreme Court rules in favor of civil rights protections for LGBTQ workersSupreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is expected to be the deciding vote in a ruling over whether the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to LGBTQ people. Gorsuch, a conservative who has shown a propensity for carving out his own judicial path, said there are strong arguments favoring LGBTQ workers who were fired for their sexual orientation or transgender status, but he wasn't quite ready to rule in their favor, calling the cases "really close."One of the things Gorsuch is considering is the aftermath of the ruling. He wondered whether the justices should take into account the "massive social upheaval" that could follow a ruling in the workers' favor. That reasoning led to a little bit of head scratching.> So Neil Gorsuch apparently was concerned today about "massive social upheaval" if SCOTUS rules LGBTQ can't be fired under Civil Rights Act. > > Except, 21+ states have these laws now, including his beloved Colorado, where he was law professor. > > There's been no upheaval.> > — Michelangelo Signorile (@MSignorile) October 8, 2019The justice also hinted that, although he is "with" the workers "on the text," he thinks that it may be up to Congress, not the Supreme Course to handle this situation, since it likely couldn't be determined whether the 1964 law meant to include sexual orientation or gender identity. "It's a question of judicial modesty," he said.

Sweden’s Anti-Immigrant Party Draws Even With Social Democrats in Poll for First Time(Bloomberg) — Support for the nationalist Sweden Democrats and the Social Democrats is almost equal for the first time in an Expressen/Demoskop poll, adding to Prime Minister Stefan Lofven’s burden as he steers his minority government. His Social Democrats, the largest political party in Sweden for most of the past century, have lost voters to anti-immigration party Sweden Democrats, the survey showed."The result stands out," Demoskop spokesman Peter Santesson told Expressen. "The loss of voters to the Sweden Democrats is the main reason for the decline in support for the Social Democrats".Recent shootings and gang violence may be the reason for the rising concern and frustration among voters, Social Democrats spokeswoman Lena Radstrom Baastad told Expressen.Support for the Social Democrats declined by 0.9 percentage point from a month earlier to 23.1%, while the Sweden Democrats gained 1.5 percentage point to 22.9%. Merkel Calls for Compromise as East-West Gap Risks Social Fabric

Merkel Calls for Compromise as East-West Gap Risks Social Fabric(Bloomberg) — Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a better exchange of ideas between different parts of Germany as social tensions in the former communist east look set to contribute to bruising electoral losses for the parties in her coalition.Speaking after receiving an honorary degree from a university in Leipzig, where she was a student, Merkel cautioned that finding common ground was key to counter the risk of populism tearing at the country’s social fabric.“Without compromise, society cannot hold together,” said the chancellor, who grew up in eastern Germany. Her trip to Leipzig coincides with two state elections in Germany’s east on Sunday. In Brandenburg and Saxony, support for Merkel’s Christian Democrats and her junior coalition partner, the Social Democrats, is expected to drop sharply amid high turnout for the far-right AfD party. The results could be another blow to Merkel’s fragile government and lead to its collapse, creating political instability as Europe’s largest economy faces the specter of recession. While people in the east grappled with existential crises in the aftermath of reunification 30 years ago, the west was largely stable. Merkel said people in the east and west need to understand each other’s histories better in order to reach a “true understanding of one another for the future.”To contact the reporters on this story: Kristie Pladson in Leipzig at kpladson@bloomberg.net;Piotr Skolimowski in Leipzig at pskolimowski@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Daniel Schaefer at dschaefer36@bloomberg.net, Chris Reiter, Rachel GrahamFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
