The heir to the Samsung empire and the leaders of several other South Korean conglomerates will go to Pyongyang this week for an inter-Korean summit, Seoul announced Sunday. North Korea urges U.S. to drop sanctions as Seoul probes illicit coal shipments
By Hyonhee Shin SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean state media on Monday urged the United States to drop sanctions, as South Korea said it was investigating nine cases of coal shipments that potentially violated U.N. resolutions. Pyongyang had demonstrated good faith by ending nuclear weapons testing and returning the remains of U.S. troops killed in the 1950-53 Korean War, and the resolutions had lost a reason to exist, said the Rodong Sinmun, a mouthpiece of the ruling Workers’ Party. The statements came days after a confidential United Nations report concluded that North Korea had not halted nuclear and missile program, in breach of U.N. resolutions, and continued illegal trade in oil, coal and other commodities.
Seoul says N. Korea sanctions may be eased before full denuclearisation
South Korea said Monday that sanctions against North Korea could be eased once it takes “substantive steps towards denuclearisation”, seemingly setting the bar lower than Washington for such a move. Last week’s Singapore summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un produced only a vague statement in which Kim “reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula”. Amid fears the summit would weaken the international coalition against the North’s nuclear programme, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stressed after the meeting that sanctions would remain in place until North Korea’s complete denuclearisation.

North-linked firms soar on Seoul market after summit
Shares in South Korean builders, railway component makers and other firms with links to the North rocketed on Monday as Friday’s inter-Korea summit fuelled optimism for new cross-border projects. The historic meeting saw the North’s leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowing to “encourage more active cooperation, exchanges” and promote “co-prosperity”. Shares of Hyundai Engineering & Construction — which built buildings at the now-shuttered Kaesong jointly-run industrial complex in the North — surged 26 percent.
Seoul envoy thanks Xi for 'big role' in N. Korea nuclear talks
South Korea’s national security adviser on Monday thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for his “big role” in the diplomatic process that has set up a historic summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. Just days after he stood outside the White House and announced the planned meet between the US president and the North Korean leader, Chung Eui-yong was in Beijing to brief Xi and China’s top diplomats on the fast-moving efforts to address the nuclear standoff. “The situation on the Korean peninsula has recently undergone very positive changes.
