Wealthy couple gets prison terms for U.S. college admissions scam

Wealthy couple gets prison terms for U.S. college admissions scamThe founder of a food and beverage packaging company and his wife were each sentenced to one month in prison on Tuesday for their roles in what prosecutors say is the largest college admissions scam uncovered in the United States. Gregory and Marcia Abbott received lighter sentences than the eight-month terms sought by federal prosecutors in Boston after they admitted to paying $ 125,000 to have a corrupt test proctor secretly correct their daughter’s answers on college entrance exams. The couple’s sentence by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani also includes a requirement that they each pay a $ 45,000 fine.

Ocasio-Cortez: The Electoral College Is a ‘Scam’

Ocasio-Cortez: The Electoral College Is a ‘Scam’Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday called the U.S. Electoral College "a scam" that negatively affects minorities."We're coming to you live from the Electoral College," the New York Democrat said in a video on Instagram, which featured her driving along a sparsely populated highway in what appears to be a desert somewhere in the western part of the country. "Many votes here, as you can see. Very efficient way to choose leadership of the country. I mean I can’t think of any other way, can you?"The freshman congresswoman went on to cite a New York magazine story titled, "Here's Every Defense of the Electoral College — and Why They're All Wrong.""Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a 'one person, one vote' system where all our votes are counted equally," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Could you imagine if we had this kind of democracy-altering 'fairness' provision for literally any other group? If we weighed, for example, black and indigenous voters more because of unfairness?""Facts are facts America," said the 29-year-old progressive, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens. "The Electoral College has to go."Several Democratic presidential candidates, including Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and South Bend, Ind. mayor Pete Buttigieg, have also said they believe the Electoral College should be retired. The notion of ending the Electoral College has picked up steam lately in blue states. A number of states have joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would give the states' electoral votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote. But the agreement will not take effect until the electoral votes of participating states total 270.

Apple's new credit card gets compared to Billy McFarland's credit card scam

Apple's new credit card gets compared to Billy McFarland's credit card scamSomeone didn't watch the Fyre Festival documentaries. Apple announced its groundbreaking new pay feature during its event on Monday: A titanium credit card with no card number, no signature, no CVV, and no expiration date. All of the vital information would be stored in the Wallet app, so it's less of a credit card and more of a physical way to pay through the app. As wonderful as it seems, Twitter users couldn't help but compare it to Magnises, the credit card/social club scam that Fyre Fest grifter Billy McFarland came up with before the disastrous music festival. Like Apple Card, Magnises' appeal was that the card was metal, not just plastic. Apple's new card will apparently be made of titanium. And of course, the whole cool factor. > Tim Cook after announcing Titanium Apple Card AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/QT1fsySyQA> > — branchclarke (@branchclarke) March 25, 2019SEE ALSO: What you should know about Billy McFarland's pre-Fyre Fest scam Magnises> Incredible: Apple brought back the Magnises card> > — nick lucchesi (@nicklucchesi) March 25, 2019> Apple Card is the new Magnises. pic.twitter.com/rYqkONHqnA> > — William Needham Finley IV (@WNFIV) March 25, 2019> [throws Magnises card in the TRASH]> > — Ryan Perry (@rynprry) March 25, 2019> Apple just dropped the new magnises titanium card AppleEvent pic.twitter.com/0U70GkUb3a> > — B E A N Z | Currently stuck in Raccoon City (@PhotosByBeanz) March 25, 2019> Someone at Apple must have watched the Fyre Festival documentary and was like, "THAT. California university says students tied to admissions scam could face expulsion

California university says students tied to admissions scam could face expulsionThe school said on Monday night it has already “placed holds on the accounts of students who may be associated with the alleged admissions scheme,” preventing them from registering for classes or acquiring transcripts. It did not name specific students, but Loughlin and her fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli are among 50 people charged last week with participating in what federal prosecutors called a $ 25 million bribery and fraud scam. Prosecutors said some students involved in the scandal were not aware their parents had made the alleged arrangements, although in other cases they knowingly took part.

Admissions scam adds insult to injury for minority applicantsIn what a federal prosecutor called “the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice,” dozens of people were charged in a bribery scheme to cheat on SAT and ACT entrance exams and buy admission to elite schools for the children of wealthy parents.
