Hawaiians brave volcanic gases, lava to retrieve pets, belongings
Lava spewing in fountains up to 300 feet high from an erupting Hawaiian volcano has destroyed 35 homes and other buildings, officials said on Monday, warning residents allowed brief visits to their properties to be prepared to flee at a moment’s notice. Many of the 1,700 people under orders to evacuate from the Leilani Estates neighborhood on the eastern side of the Big Island were permitted to return home during daylight hours on Sunday and Monday, during a lull in seismic activity from Kilauea. “Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice,” the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said in an alert on its website.
Colombia opens bids to retrieve 18th century sunken treasure
Colombia on Friday opens bidding for investors willing to retrieve billions of dollars in gold and silver from an 18th century ship wreck off the country’s Caribbean coast. The Spanish galleon “San Jose” was the main ship in a fleet carrying gold and silver — likely extracted from Spanish colonial mines in Peru and Bolivia — and other valuables back to King Philip V. President Juan Manuel Santos wants to form a public-private partnership to retrieve the shipwreck items, and build a museum for the recovered pieces and a laboratory to study and conserve the material.

Ghosh’s remains were only located this year by other climbers on the mountain.
