Helicopters rescue residents from fresh Hawaii volcano lava flowHelicopters were rushed in to rescue four trapped residents after lava flowing from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano isolated a cluster of homes, as the US Geological Survey said Saturday an explosion from its crater sent ash pouring into the sky. Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim wrote on Twitter Friday that “fast moving lava from Fissure 20 has crossed Pohoiki Rd near Malama Ki Place,” near the Puna forest reserve. The lava is “isolating appx 40 homes in area,” he wrote, adding that four people were “safely evacuated” by Hawaii County and National Guard helicopters.

Hawaii residents rue paradise built with 'lava discount'

Hawaii residents rue paradise built with 'lava discount'By Terray Sylvester and Jolyn Rosa PAHOA, Hawaii/HONOLULU (Reuters) – Six days before Kilauea began erupting on Hawaii’s Big Island, residents living under one of the world’s most active volcanoes attended a community forum on preparing for emergencies. It was prompted in part by a mistaken alert in January that North Korea had launched a ballistic missile attack on Hawaii, which sent residents and tourists scrambling for shelter across the U.S. Pacific island state. Quakes, lava and gas: Hawaii residents flee volcanic threats

Quakes, lava and gas: Hawaii residents flee volcanic threatsMany rural residents living on an erupting volcano in Hawaii fled the threat of lava that spewed into the air in bursts of fire and pushed up steam from cracks in roadways Friday, while others tried to get back to their homes. Officials ordered more than 1,700 people out of Big Island neighborhoods near Kilauea volcano’s newest lava flow, warning of the dangers of spattering hot rock and high levels of sulfuric gas that could threaten the elderly and people with breathing problems. Officials said highways, buildings and utility lines were not damaged, but residents said they felt strong shaking and more stress as they dealt with the dual environmental phenomena.
