Rebels fire shells from Syria buffer despite heavy arms pullout: monitor

Rebels fire shells from Syria buffer despite heavy arms pullout: monitorRebels have fired mortar shells from a planned buffer zone in northwest Syria, a monitor said Sunday, days after they were meant to have withdrawn such weapons from the area. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said rebels in the zone fired several “mortar shells at an army position in nearby Hama province, killing two soldiers” late Saturday. Also on Saturday, rebels shelled Aleppo province from other parts of the demilitarised area, with no casualties recorded, the Britain-based monitor said.

Syria rebels deny withdrawing arms from north under deal

Syria rebels deny withdrawing arms from north under dealSyrian rebels on Sunday denied pulling any heavy arms out of a major opposition bastion in the north, as the deadline to implement a demilitarisation deal there draws closer. Regime ally Moscow and rebel backer Ankara agreed earlier in September to create a buffer zone around the opposition stronghold of Idlib that would be free of both jihadists and heavy arms. The deal has so far averted a massive assault on the region by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government, but its implementation is expected to be complex.

Syria rebels blow up bridges to hamper expected Idlib assault

Syria rebels blow up bridges to hamper expected Idlib assaultRebels from Syria’s Idlib have blown up two key bridges in a bid to hamper an expected government assault on the country’s last remaining rebel-held province, a monitor said on Friday. The bridges over the Orontes River linked areas of neighbouring Hama province, under government control, to rebel-held territory in Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The bridges were located in the Al-Ghab plain, which straddles Hama and Idlib provinces and could be one of the first targets of any government offensive.

South Sudan’s former vice president and rebel leader Riek Machar said after the signing, “today we celebrate, not just in South Sudan, but throughout the world.” South Sudan became independent from Sudan in 2011, but civil war broke out two years later between the government led by Kiir and a rebel movement led by Machar.

More time needed to achieve peace, South Sudan rebels say

More time needed to achieve peace, South Sudan rebels sayBy Denis Dumo JUBA (Reuters) – South Sudanese rebels said on Thursday that more time is needed to secure lasting peace in the country and it would be necessary to address the root causes of a civil war. “There is no shortcut to peace,” the group said in a statement after peace talks in Ethiopia between its leader Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir, the first time the two men had met since 2016, when a peace deal collapsed and fighting re-erupted between their forces. SPLM/SPLA (IO) said the solution to the five-year civil war, which has killed tens of thousands of people and forced more than 3 million people to flee their homes, was to revisit the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
