More time needed to achieve peace, South Sudan rebels say

More time needed to achieve peace, South Sudan rebels sayBy Denis Dumo JUBA (Reuters) – South Sudanese rebels said on Thursday that more time is needed to secure lasting peace in the country and it would be necessary to address the root causes of a civil war. “There is no shortcut to peace,” the group said in a statement after peace talks in Ethiopia between its leader Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir, the first time the two men had met since 2016, when a peace deal collapsed and fighting re-erupted between their forces. SPLM/SPLA (IO) said the solution to the five-year civil war, which has killed tens of thousands of people and forced more than 3 million people to flee their homes, was to revisit the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Syrian army vows to press war, rebels say strikes not enough

Syrian army vows to press war, rebels say strikes not enoughBy Tom Perry and Ellen Francis BEIRUT (Reuters) – The Syrian opposition said Western strikes on Saturday would not change the course of the seven-year-old war as the army said it would crush remaining rebel parts of the country. The missiles by the United States, Britain, and France targeted President Bashar al-Assad’s chemical weapons capabilities in response to a deadly poison gas attack near Damascus a week ago, Washington said. Some insurgent officials said they feared an onslaught against the rebel bastion of Idlib, which a senior Iranian official has indicated could be the next target.

Ghouta evacuation stalls over differences among Syria rebelsAl-Wafideen (Syria) (AFP) – Evacuations of rebels and civilians from the last opposition pocket in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta stalled on Thursday as divisions continued within the Islamist faction that holds the area, state media said. A convoy of 20 buses organised by the government had entered the former rebel bastion’s main town of Douma to prepare for a fourth day of evacuations but later pulled back to the town’s outskirts, an AFP correspondent said. Syria’s state news agency SANA said the buses left Douma due to “differences between” rebels and “in order to let them sort out by themselves these differences”.
