Vladimir Putin finally admits fire-hit Russian submarine was nuclear powered

Vladimir Putin finally admits fire-hit Russian submarine was nuclear poweredVladimir Putin has admitted that the fire that killed 14 sailors on Monday happened on a nuclear submarine, although the defence ministry said the reactor was not damaged. Ministry head Sergei Shoigu met with Mr Putin on Thursday upon his return from the Arctic naval town of Severomorsk, where the stricken submersible was taken. During their conversation, Mr Putin asked him about the nuclear power unit on board, according to a Kremlin readout. Moscow had not previously confirmed the presence of a reactor and still has not said what kind of submarine was involved, arguing that these are state secrets. Mr Shoigu told Mr Putin that "the nuclear power unit has been sealed off and all personnel have been removed". He also said the cause of the disaster was a "fire in the battery compartment which then spread". The blaze happened on Monday but was only announced the next day by Russian authorities, who have refused to give many details about the incident. Nicknamed "Losharik" after a Soviet cartoon horse, it is operated by a navy division responsible for reconnaissance and intelligence gathering and can reportedly dive to depths of 10,000 feet. The submarine is reportedly able to cut underwater cables that carry much of the world's internet traffic. All 14 of the sailors who died were officers, leading to speculation that it was on a top-secret mission. The defence ministry said they were performing "bathymetric measurements" of the ocean floor. One sailor put a civilian in a compartment and shut the hatch to return to fighting the blaze, it said.  Arctic neighbour Norway said it had been informed of a gas explosion on the submarine, but the Russian defence ministry denied this. Norwegian authorities said they had not detected abnormal levels of radiation in the Barents Sea.

Apple says all its facilities now powered by clean energy

Apple says all its facilities now powered by clean energyThe iPhone maker also said nine suppliers had recently committed to running their operations entirely on renewable energy sources like wind and solar, bringing to 23 the total number to make such a pledge. Major U.S. corporations such as Apple, Wal-Mart Inc and Alphabet Inc have become some of the country’s biggest buyers of renewable forms of energy, driving substantial growth in the wind and solar industries. Alphabet’s Google last year purchased enough renewable energy to cover all of its electricity consumption worldwide.

Virgin Galactic completes first powered flight since  fatal crash in 2014

Virgin Galactic completes first powered flight since  fatal crash in 2014 Virgin Galactic has completed its first powered flight since a fatal crash nearly four years, a milestone which Sir Richard Branson said brought space ‘tantalisingly close.’ The company has struggled to re-establish itself following the death of co-pilot Michael Alsbury, 39, who was killed when his aircraft crashed into the Mojave Desert in California in October 2014. Virgin Galactic had promised to send space tourists to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere where they could see the curvature of the planet and experience weightlessness. But after Captain Alsbury’s death, some customers who had already bought tickets demanded refunds, and the company spent years redesigning the craft, carrying out extensive engine testing and glide tests before attempting another supersonic flight. It then powered up for 30 seconds and landed safely. It puts Britain firmly back in the commercial tourism and launch provider space race, which until recently the US appeared to be winning. Branson said Virgin Galactic was ‘back on track’ and confirmed that the flight had reached Mach 1.6, more than 1.5 times the speed of sound. Announcing the success on Twitter, he added: “Data review to come, then on to the next flight. Space feels tantalisingly close now.” The entire project has been dogged with problems. Two of the six flights made by SpaceShipOne suffered potentially catastrophic problems. And in 2007, an explosion killed three engineers. Even in the November following the crash CEO George Whitesides said it would be ‘months not years’ until commercial flights began, but an investigation found there had been inadequate safety features and the team was forced to go back to the drawing board, unveiling a new design in 2016. Around 24 passengers pulled out and have had the $ 250,000 (£157,000) ticket price refunded. Although some may only have paid deposits, the company stands to lose more than £3 million in lost sales. High profile ticket-holders include Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet and, until his death Stephen Hawking. In October, Virgin Galactic was given a huge $ 1 billion boost from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At the time, Branson said the company was just months away from sending a ship into Earth’s atmosphere. Following the flight Virgin Galactic tweeted: “Touch down. Congratulations Mark “Forger” Stucky and Dave Mackay for a great milestone test flight”
