Evacuation of more than 60,000 planned in Frankfurt while wartime 'blockbuster' bomb is defused

Evacuation of more than 60,000 planned in Frankfurt while wartime 'blockbuster' bomb is defusedAt least 60,000 people will be forced from their homes in central Frankfurt on Sunday, as Germany begins an operation to defuse a huge unexploded World War II bomb dubbed "blockbuster". It will be the biggest evacuation of its kind in post-war Germany, Frankfurt’s security chief Markus Frank said. Police have since been guarding the bomb site, which is close to the city centre and just some 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) north of the main Zeil shopping area.  People near the sealed off area where a British World War II bomb was found during construction work in Wismarer Strasse, Frankfurt Main, Germany, Credit: Armando Barbani/EPA Frank said homes and buildings within a 1.5-kilometre radius of the site were to be cleared by 0600 GMT, and residents will likely need to stay away until 1800 GMT. "We must have this area completely cleared by 8am," Frank said. The Westend district is home to many of Frankfurt’s top bankers, including European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, who is known however to spend his weekends away from the German city. Two major hospitals are also within the evacuation zone, including one with a big ward of newborns. Staff at the affected hospitals began transferring patients and infants to other medical centres beginning Saturday. "We have almost finished the evacuation in the hospitals, but for retirement homes, it’s going to take a bit more time," a spokesman for the city’s firefighters said. Although police have said there is no immediate danger, the bomb’s massive size prevents them from taking any chances during the disarming process. More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs are regularly found buried in Germany, legacies of the intense bombing campaigns by the Allied forces against Nazi Germany. On Saturday, 21,000 people had to be evacuated from the western city of Koblenz as bomb disposal experts defused an unexploded American World War II shell. In May, 50,000 residents were forced to leave their homes in the northern city of Hanover for an operation to defuse several WWII-era bombs. One of the biggest such evacuations to date took place on Christmas Day 2016, when another unexploded British bomb, containing 1.8 tonnes of explosives, prompted the evacuation of 54,000 people in the southern city of Augsburg.

Spain suspect says terror cell planned big attack on monuments

Spain suspect says terror cell planned big attack on monumentsA suspected member of the terror cell that unleashed carnage in Spain last week admitted to a judge on Tuesday that the jihadists had planned to hit monuments in an even bigger attack. Mohamed Houli Chemlal, 21, said he knew of the plans two months ago, as he, and three other suspects, appeared in court for the first time since twin attacks killed 15 people and wounded more than 100. The four are the only surviving suspects from what was believed to be a 12-man terror cell that rammed a van into pedestrians on a tourist-packed boulevard in Barcelona on Thursday.

Barcelona attack: Suspects planned 'much bigger explosive attack'

Barcelona attack: Suspects planned 'much bigger explosive attack'An alleged member of an Islamist terror cell that carried out the Barcelona van attack told a Spanish court on Tuesday that the group had been planning a much bigger attack using explosives, a judicial source said. The testimony to Spain's High Court came from Mohamed Houli Chemlal, who was arrested after being hurt in a blast at a house in Alcanar, southwest of Barcelona, a day before Thursday's van attack on the crowded Las Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona which killed 13 people.  The four remaining alleged members of the terror cell arrived in a Madrid court on Tuesday where they will be questioned by a judge after eight other suspects were killed. Spanish media have named the suspects as Driss Oukabir, Mohammed Aalla, Salh el Karib and Mohamed Houli Chemal. One was arrested in Alcanar, south of Barcelona, where a house that was accidentally blown apart turned out to be a botched bomb-making workshop. On Monday, Spanish police shot dead Barcelona terror suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub, in a dramatic end to a massive manhunt for the Moroccan national who was wearing a fake suicide belt and shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) when he was killed. The Moroccan national was the last remaining member of a 12-man cell suspected of plotting last week's deadly vehicle rampages in Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils that were claimed by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) – its first in Spain. Among those killed in the explosion was a Moroccan imam at the heart of the cell, Abdelbaki Es Satty, Catalan police chief Josep Lluis Trapero confirmed on Monday. Police: Suspect in Barcelona van attack shot dead 00:48 Village where suspect shot is 'ideal hideout' Four days after the van rampage on the tourist-packed Las Ramblas boulevard, police on Monday gunned down 22-year-old Abouyaaqoub in the village about 60 kilometres (40 miles) west of Barcelona, after receiving multiple tip-offs. Arnau Gomez, who lives about a kilometre away from where the suspect was shot, described the village of 300 people as being an ideal hideout as "it is far from everything". "In the hills there are many homes of seasonal workers, it's easy to hide," he said. Terror in Spain: Dozens killed and injured in Barcelona and Cambrils In Abouyaaqoub's hometown of Ripoll, where many of the suspects grew up or lived, Moroccan factory worker Hassan Azzidi said he was "happy and sad all at once" that the suspect had been gunned down. "This had to end, because we're living as if in a war, but at the same time, someone brainwashed such a young boy," he said. In total, 15 people died in the attacks, including Pau Perez, a 34-year-old man found stabbed to death in a Ford Focus outside Barcelona on Friday after Abouyaaqoub hijacked his car to make a getaway. Influence of imam accused of radicalising others Investigators seeking to unravel the terror cell had homed in on the small border town of Ripoll at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains in northeastern Spain. Satty, aged in his 40s, came under scrutiny as he is believed to have radicalised youths in Ripoll. Police said the imam had spent time in prison and had once been in contact with a suspect wanted on terrorism charges, but was never himself charged with terror-related incidents. How the Barcelona and Cambrils terror attacks unfolded 02:04 In Belgium, the mayor of the Vilvorde region said that Satty had spent time in the Brussels suburb of Machelen – next to the city's airport – between January and March 2016. In the Moroccan town of M'rirt, relatives of Abouyaaqoub have accused the imam of radicalising the young man as well as his brother Houssein. "Over the last two years, Younes and Houssein began to radicalise under the influence of this imam," their grandfather said. How the suspected jihadists had 120 gas canisters The suspected jihadists had been preparing bombs for "one or more attacks in Barcelona", Trapero said on Sunday, revealing that 120 gas canisters and traces of TATP – a homemade explosive that is an Isil hallmark – had been found at their bomb factory. The accidental explosion in the house in Alcanar, south of Barcelona, may have forced the suspects to modify their plans. Several hours later, a similar attack in Cambrils left one woman dead. Police shot dead the five attackers there, some of whom were wearing fake explosive belts and carrying knives. Hundreds of Muslims rallied on Monday at Las Ramblas, holding slogans like "No to terrorism" and "We are Muslims, not terrorists".  Terror timeline – Ramming attacks involving vehicles
