US woman sues Harvard over 'slave ancestor' pictures

US woman sues Harvard over 'slave ancestor' picturesA US woman who says she is descended from slaves who were photographed in 1850 by a racist Harvard University professor on Wednesday sued the university over the “exploitation” of the images of her ancestors. Tamara Lanier filed suit in the northeastern state of Massachusetts over the photographs taken in South Carolina of a slave and his daughter, known only by their first names: Renty — the patriarch of her family — and Delia. The images, thought to be the earliest known photographs of American slaves, are currently in a museum at the university near Boston.

Police praise Jayme Closs' bravery as first pictures revealed of place kidnapped teen was held captive

Police praise Jayme Closs' bravery as first pictures revealed of place kidnapped teen was held captivePolice have praised the bravery of Jayme Closs, a 13-year-old girl who was held captive for 88 days, saying it was her "will" that broke the case. It came as photographs emerged of the rural house in Wisconsin where she was held prisoner. Her alleged kidnapper, Jake Patterson, 21, was expected to be charged today [MON]. He is alleged to have broken into her home in Barron, Wisconsin, before murdering her parents and abducting her. After escaping last week Jayme was found, skinny and disheveled, about 60 miles away. Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald, who led the investigation, said: "The will of a 13-year-old girl is what broke this case. We've actually been able to bring her home to Barron County. That's been the goal of mine for 88 days. And we got to bring her home." Giving further details of the investigation, he said the 911 call made at the time of the murder and kidnapping was 48 seconds long. You hear yelling or maybe a scream," he said  "And it ends by getting hung up. The time from the 911 call until our deputies arrive is less than four minutes. We think this was well planned out." He said Patterson had fired a shotgun through the family's front door to get in, and had "targeted" Jayme for kidnapping. He left no fingerprints at the scene. The sheriff said: "He prepared himself to try to beat the forensics. Things like he cut his hair all off so that he wouldn't leave trace evidence. He did other things to cover up forensic and digital evidence." Jake Thomas Patterson has been charged with murdering Jayme's parents and kidnapping her Credit: Universal News  Police originally thought her parents Denise and James Closs, who worked at a turkey processing plant, must be the targets, the sheriff told CBS's 48 Hours crime programme. But there proved to be no link to Patterson. He said the motive was the "million-dollar question"  and "I'd love to know the answer to that." The FBI confirmed it was Jayme who gave details of Patterson's car that led to him being found. Sheriff Fitzgerald said the suspect was now "sitting in his cell looking at the wall, all by himself". He said Patterson had no criminal record, or job, and no known link to Jayme or her family. The sheriff added: "This is a true mystery. We believe the first time they met was the night of the incident."

French family narrowly escape cheetahs after getting out of car to take pictures in safari park

French family narrowly escape cheetahs after getting out of car to take pictures in safari parkA French family of five have been filmed narrowly escaping attack by cheetahs in a Dutch safari park after they left their car to take photographs and were chased by the big cats. Beekse Bergen is a drive-through African wildlife safari park, in the south of the Netherlands, where visitors are under strict instruction not to leave their cars. Apparently blithely unaware they were risking death or injury from the wild beasts who roam free in the park, the tourists were filmed leaving their French-registered car with two young children. The cheetahs can be seen calmly sunning themselves when the family gets out to take snaps. Cheetahs are the fastest animals on land Credit: BBC At first the big cats fail to react. The family can then be seen driving a little further down the road and striding up a small hill within yards of the animals, who suddenly snap into action. Cheetahs are the world's fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 mph. They are built for speed, grace, and hunting and mainly prey on small antelopes such as Thomson's gazelles and impalas. But they are clearly interested in the humans and appear to start stalking their prey. The clueless tourists only spot the cheetahs at the last minute and make a panic-stricken dash for their vehicle. All, except one woman, who can be seen picking up the youngest child and apparently shooing the cheetahs away before slipping into the car. They then drive off miraculously unscathed. A spokesman for Beekse Bergen park said they make it clear it is strictly forbidden to leave one’s vehicle during the safari.  'We inform visitors about the risks in several languages throughout the park,' the spokesman told Dutch broadcaster NOS.  Dutch news website VK Mag suggested introducing “mandatory IQ tests” for anyone wanting to do the safari.

Marine Le Pen charged in France for tweeting gruesome pictures of Isil violence

Marine Le Pen charged in France for tweeting gruesome pictures of Isil violenceMarine Le Pen, the French far-Right leader, was charged on Thursday for posting graphic images of atrocities by Isil jihadists on Twitter — including a photograph of the decapitated body of an American reporter. The move by a judge in Nanterre, a Paris suburb, came after the National Assembly voted in November to strip the National Front president of her parliamentary immunity from prosecution for tweeting three photographs showing killings by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). The images, tweeted in December 2015 with the caption "This is Daesh [the Arabic acronym for Isil],” included a picture of the beheaded journalist, James Foley, a man on fire in a cage and a tank driving over another victim. At the time, Foley's parents accused Ms Le Pen of using their son’s "shamefully uncensored" image for political gain. Ms Le Pen later deleted the photograph from her account and claimed she did not know it showed Foley when she tweeted it. She said she removed it immediately after his family complained. Foley, a freelance reporter, was abducted in Syria in 2012 and beheaded in August 2014. Journalist James Foley in Aleppo, Syria, in July, 2012 Credit: AP Ms Le Pen, 49, has been placed under formal investigation — a stage in the French legal process equivalent to being charged in Britain — for “distributing violent images”, which is an offence in France. If the case goes to trial and she is convicted, Ms Le Pen faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (£66,515).   Ms Le Pen said: “I am being charged for having denounced the horror of Daesh. In other countries that would have merited a medal. Political persecution is no longer limited by decency.” In January, Gilbert Collard, another French MP allied with the FN, was charged with the same offence. Ms Le Pen was an MEP but not a French MP when she posted the images in December 2015. The European Parliament lifted her immunity in March last year at the request of French legal authorities. She was elected to the French parliament last June. The judge’s decision came just over a week before the FN’s annual conference at which Ms Le Pen is expected to present a new name for the party in an effort to distance it from racist and xenophobic associations. French far-right Front National (FN) party president Marine Le Pen, pets a cow at the 2018 Paris International Agriculture Fair, February 28 Credit: AFP The change is part of her plan to rebuild the FN after being trounced by Emmanuel Macron in last year’s elections. The investigation is unlikely to affect her popularity with her core supporters. However, she appears increasingly isolated within the party. Many FN voters would prefer her niece, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, 28, as leader. Others remain loyal to her estranged father, the party’s 89-year-old founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, who has spoken out against her leadership and the proposed name change. The FN also faces other investigations, including one into alleged misuse of EU funds, which have not dented its appeal among the party faithful.
