More pharma companies added in US price-fixing probeProsecutors announced Tuesday they added 12 more companies and two executives as targets in a wide-ranging antitrust investigation that charges generic drug manufacturers fixed drug prices. The suit, which was filed in December and is now supported by prosecutors from 45 US states, alleges a broad conspiracy by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals and others to divvy up markets and set prices to boost profits at consumer’s expense. On Tuesday, attorneys general from the 45 states asked a federal court to allow them to increase the number of generic drug manufacturer defendants from six to 18, increase the number of drugs at issue in the litigation and name two executives as defendants.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gottlieb would be in charge of implementing Trump’s plan to dramatically cut regulations governing food, drugs, cosmetics, dietary supplements and tobacco. Gottlieb is well known on Capitol Hill, where he has testified multiple times on hot-button health issues, including complex drug pricing matters, and is viewed favorably by drug companies and pharmaceutical investors.

The teenagers said they were spurred to try recreate the drug after Shkreli became a global figure of hate by buying the rights to Daraprim and then hiking the price in the United States from $ 13.50 a tablet to $ 750. In response Shkreli tweeted some sarcastic remarks about the students' successful recreation of pyrimethamine, the active ingredient for Daraprim, an anti-parasitic used to treat people with low immune systems such as those with HIV.

Kite Pharma, Bluebird collaborate on cancer T-cell therapies

(Reuters) – Cancer drug developers Kite Pharma Inc and Bluebird Bio Inc said they would partner to develop and market T-cell therapies for HPV-associated cancers. T-cell receptors are a class of compounds that make it easier for the body’s immune cells to mainly identify and then destroy cancer cells. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract, believed to cause 70 percent of cervical cancers as well as other urogenital cancers. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Tuesday ordered a new trial for GlaxoSmithKline Plc against an Abbott Laboratories spinoff because Abbott excluded the potential juror. The case involved Abbott's pricing of HIV medications, a controversial issue in the gay community. Glaxo accused Abbott of improperly hiking the price of one drug, Norvir, to help it preserve sales growth of one of its other HIV blockbusters, Kaletra.

An Indian government committee is reviewing patented drugs of foreign firms to see if so-called compulsory licenses, which in effect break exclusivity rights, can be issued for some of them to bring down costs, two senior government officials told Reuters. Emerging markets, from South Africa to China and India, are battling to bring down healthcare costs and boost access to drugs to treat diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Western drugmakers, including Pfizer Inc, Novartis AG, Roche Holding AG and Sanofi SA, covet a bigger share of the fast-growing drugs market in India.
