GOP Rep. Peter King retiring, giving Dems new 2020 target

GOP Rep. Peter King retiring, giving Dems new 2020 targetRep. Peter King, a moderate Republican who has represented a Long Island congressional district for nearly 30 years, announced Monday he won’t seek reelection, enhancing Democrats’ chances to grab yet another suburban House seat as they defend their majority in 2020. The decision comes days after voters flocked to Democratic candidates in state elections in Kentucky and Virginia, underscoring Republican vulnerability in a suburban revolt against President Donald Trump.

DOJ Admits in Michael Flynn Case That FBI ‘Mistakenly Identified’ Peter Strzok Notes

DOJ Admits in Michael Flynn Case That FBI ‘Mistakenly Identified’ Peter Strzok NotesThe attorneys prosecuting former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn were forced to admit in a Tuesday letter to Flynn’s legal defense that the notes which formed the official document describing Flynn’s January 2017 interview were not written by agent Peter Strzok, as they've maintained throughout the case.“We were informed that the notes we had identified as Peter Strzok’s, were actually the other agent’s notes (see Surreply, Exhibit 1), and what we had identified as the other agent’s notes were in fact Strzok’s notes (see Surreply, Exibit 2)” the letter to Flynn’s lawyer Sidney Powell reads. The FBI’s admission calls into further question the credibility of the case and of former FBI agent Peter Strzok, who told the FBI that his partner Joe Pientka was “primarily responsible for taking notes and writing the FD-302.” The case against Flynn, who entered a guilty plea for lying to the FBI in December 2017, centers around the 302 form, which per Bureau protocol, stands in place of a transcript, as the FBI does not record its interviews. In defending Flynn, Powell has argued that Strzok’s supposed notes were too orderly and well constructed to have been taken in the actual interview. Now the letter, coupled with prosecution’s release of notes last week, apparently reveal that Strzok, in fact, took the majority of the notes in the interviewStrzok led the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server, and was fired from Mueller’s investigative team when text messages disparaging President Trump were discovered between him and FBI colleague Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair. The letter was prompted by Powell’s bombshell allegation that the FBI deliberately manipulated the original 302 document to suggest that Flynn lied about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.“Those changes added an unequivocal statement that ‘Flynn stated he did not’ — in response to whether Mr. Flynn had asked Kislyak to vote in a certain manner or slow down the UN vote [on sanctions],” Powell wrote. “This is a deceptive manipulation because, as the notes of the agents show, Mr. Flynn was not even sure he had spoken to Russia/Kislyak on the issue. He had talked to dozens of countries.”“That question and answer does not appear in the notes, yet it was made into a criminal offense,” Powell argued in the motion. “The draft also shows that the agents moved a sentence to make it seem to be an answer to a question it was not.”Earlier this week, Powell demanded in another court filing that the FBI search its internal “Sentinel Database” to uncover any drafts of the 302 which may show substantial changes, after the government argued that any edits to the document, which was filed over three weeks after the interview, were merely “grammatical and stylistic.”Released text messages between Strzok and Paige show that on February 10, the same day that news broke from “senior intelligence officials” that Flynn had discussed sanctions with Kislyak, Strozk told Paige that he had updated the 302 form to reflect her edits.“I made your edits, and sent them to Joe. I also emailed you an updated 302 . . . hopefully it doesn’t need much more editing. I will polish it this weekend, and have it ready for Monday. I really appreciate your times and edits,” Strzok said.On Tuesday night, Powell told Fox News that the letter all but confirms her argument.“Their entire case depends upon what these two agents said. And now, we’re realizing 18 months later they’re looking at their file and realizing that ‘oh, by the way, we got the names of the two agents crossed on the notes, the notes you thought were Mr. Strzok’s, that we told you were Mr. Strzok’s, are not, they’re the other agent’s, and vice versa,’” Powell said. “It’s appalling. What else have they gotten wrong? We can’t trust anything they say.”

Trump Trade Adviser Peter Navarro: ‘I Am Never Disappointed in My President!’

Trump Trade Adviser Peter Navarro: ‘I Am Never Disappointed in My President!’Reacting to reports that President Donald Trump promised China he would stay quiet on the Hong Kong protests while mentioning his potential political rivals, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Friday refused to answer whether he brought up former Vice President Joe Biden to China—proudly declaring he’s never been “disappointed in my president.”Appearing on CNN Newsroom on Friday morning, the White House official was pressed early on by host Jim Sciutto about the president’s reported assurance to the Chinese leader that he’d stay mum on the protests as trade talks between the two countries continued. Navarro, meanwhile, implied the story was false because CNN was relying on “anonymous sources.”“You assert that—that’s not a fact in evidence,” Navarro exclaimed. “I read through that whole story. It was one assertion of fact after another, without sourcing.”After Sciutto defended the reporting, noting there were multiple sources and public information corroborating the story, he continued to question Navarro about Trump not taking sides in the Hong Kong protests, noting that the president’s trade adviser himself has praised the protesters.“He said very clearly he wanted a peaceful resolution to that,” Navarro declared, prompting Sciutto to once again state that Trump merely said he wanted “both sides to refrain from violence.”“So what’s the point here, Jim?” Navarro snapped back.“I’m asking you, are you disappointed the president hasn’t made a public statement of support,” the CNN host wondered aloud.“I’m never disappointed in my president,” the Trump aide declared. “I’m never disappointed in my president!”Towards the end of the segment, after Navarro repeatedly compared him to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (a favorite target of Trumpworld’s lately), Sciutto circled back to the president calling on the Chinese government to investigate the Biden family.“Have you ever raised investigating Joe Biden or his son during contacts with Chinese officials?” Sciutto asked.“Here’s the thing,” the White House official responded. “I will never talk about what happens inside the White House. OK? Not confirm or deny. Because that’s the slippery slope.”Navarro would go on and deflect some more as Sciutto attempted to get a yes-no answer from him, complaining about leaks from the White House and anonymous sources in reports on the administration. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Peter Chadwick: Millionaire arrested over wife’s murder after four years on the run

Peter Chadwick: Millionaire arrested over wife’s murder after four years on the runA fugitive British-born millionaire suspected of strangling his wife to death has been arrested in Mexico after four years on the run.Peter Chadwick was arrested by American immigration officials over the weekend and has since been deported to the United States, where prosecutors hope he will stand trial.Detectives in Newport Beach, California were first called to the house shared by the property investor and his wife Quee Choo Chadwick in 2012. The couple had failed to collect their two youngest sons from school and a concerned neighbour had contacted the authorities.Investigators found a broken vase and drops of blood on the floor inside the house, alongside Quee Cho's mobile phone and wedding ring. The next day Peter called the police and claimed that a construction worker named “Juan” had kidnapped him, killed his wife and fled with her body.Detectives were left unconvinced and the property investor quickly became the main suspect in his wife's disappearance. Her body was found a week later in a bin in suburban San Diego.Peter was charged with first-degree murder and bailed on a $ 1m (£820,000) bond. At first the millionaire attended court appearances and surrendered his US and UK passports, but in 2015 he disappeared from his father’s house, having withdrawn large sums of money.Peter had also researched how to alter his identity, police said.He went on to become one of the US’ most sought after fugitives and US Marshals placed him on the country’s most-wanted list in 2018. They also offered a $ 100,000 (£82,000) reward for tips leading to his capture.Newport Beach officers also wrote and produced a true crime podcast series about him, in an effort to bring attention to the search. The 55-year-old left clues to make it appear as though he had fled to Canada. But detectives said they believed he had been living in Mexico for the period he was missing. He was arrested in an area popular with ex-pats near Puebla, officials said.Authorities declined to pinpoint a specific tip that led to the arrest but said they received leads from around the world. He is now expected to appear in court in Santa Ana this week. Peter Thiel Says Elizabeth Warren Is Most ‘Dangerous’ Candidate

Peter Thiel Says Elizabeth Warren Is Most ‘Dangerous’ Candidate(Bloomberg) — Peter Thiel, the technology industry’s most prominent supporter of President Donald Trump, called Elizabeth Warren the most “dangerous” Democratic presidential candidate. In a rare television interview, Thiel said Monday night that Warren, a Massachusetts senator, was the only Democrat talking about important issues like the economy.“All the others are almost equally unimpressive, in that it’s all identity politics in one flavor or another,” he told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson. “I’m most scared by Elizabeth Warren. I think she’s the one who’s actually talking about the economy, which is the only thing, the thing that I think matters by far the most.”Thiel spent most of the interview discussing the subject of a speech he gave Sunday at a conservative conference in Washington: what he called “seemingly treasonous” conduct by Google. The billionaire, who sits on the board of Facebook Inc., said the U.S. should investigate Google’s ties to China. In response, Google denied it works with the Chinese military. In 2016, Thiel established himself as a Silicon Valley pariah when he endorsed Trump for president. The venture capitalist donated $ 1.25 million to the campaign and spoke in support of Trump at the Republican National Convention. He reiterated his support of Trump in Sunday’s speech by praising the administration’s foreign policy, in particular the trade battle with China.During the speech, Thiel made reference to Warren, who has advocated for breaking up big technology companies including Google and Facebook. She has said concentration of corporate power punishes small businesses and average Americans. Thiel said Google employees had donated to Warren’s campaign, suggesting “a little bit of a bad conscience.”Monday’s Fox News interview concluded with Thiel’s comments about the presidential race: “Elizabeth Warren is the dangerous one.”(Updates with Thiel background in the fifth paragraph.)To contact the reporter on this story: Lizette Chapman in San Francisco at lchapman19@bloomberg.netTo contact the editor responsible for this story: Mark Milian at mmilian@bloomberg.netFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
