World’s first successful penis transplant performed in S. Africa: doctors

World's first successful penis transplant performed in S. Africa: doctorsSouth African doctors announced Friday that they had performed the world's first successful penis transplant, three months after the ground-breaking operation. The 21-year-old patient had his penis amputated three years ago after a botched circumcision at a traditional initiation ceremony. In a nine-hour operation at the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, he received his new penis from a deceased donor, whose family were praised by doctors. "We've proved that it can be done — we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had," said Professor Frank Graewe, head of plastic reconstructive surgery at Stellenbosch University.

South African doctors perform world’s first penis transplant

South African doctors have successfully performed the world’s first penis transplant on a young man who had his organ amputated after a botched circumcision ritual, a hospital said on Friday. The nine-hour transplant, which occurred in December last year, was part of a pilot study by Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch to help scores of initiates who either die or lose their penises in botched circumcisions each year. For a young man of 18 or 19 years the loss of his penis can be deeply traumatic,” said Andre van der Merwe, head of the university’s urology unit and who led the operation said in a statement. “There is a greater need in South Africa for this type of procedure than elsewhere in the world, as many young men lose their penises every year due to complications from traditional circumcision,” Van der Merwe said.

Surgery may not stop locker-room taunts about penis appearance

By Madeline Kennedy (Reuters Health) – Surgery to change penis appearance may not do much to stop locker-room teasing in high school, a new study suggests. The urologists who conducted the study say parents who bring their young sons to be circumcised – or to get rid of some leftover foreskin after a circumcision – often say they’re worried that their child may be teased later in life because of the appearance of his penis. “We were looking to find out if the parents’ concerns about teasing in the locker room were valid,” said Dr. Chris Cooper, the study’s senior author from the University of Iowa. As reported this month in The Journal of Urology, the researchers surveyed 290 undergraduate men at the University of Iowa about their high school gym classes and sports and any teasing they witnessed or experienced in the locker rooms.

Doctors deny cutting off Alabama man’s penis

(Reuters) – An Alabama man’s claim that his penis was amputated recently in a circumcision gone wrong is entirely without merit, an attorney representing the doctors being sued said on Wednesday. Attorney Michael Florie said the plaintiff, 56-year-old Johnny Lee Banks Jr., has had both legs amputated due to severe diabetes, suffers from end-stage kidney failure and the hospital named in the lawsuit has labored to keep him alive. “Every allegation in the lawsuit is false,” Florie said. It’s an outrage.” Florie, along with attorneys for Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, where the operation allegedly took place, has moved to dismiss the case and sanction the plaintiff’s lawyer for suing before seeing the medical records.

Alabama man sues, claiming penis amputated instead of circumcised

(Reuters) – An Alabama man who went in to a hospital last month for a circumcision awoke after surgery to find his penis had been amputated, his lawyer said on Thursday. Johnny Lee Banks Jr., 56, said in a lawsuit filed in state court earlier this week that no one at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, had told him why it had been necessary to remove his penis, according to his attorney, John Graves. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the hospital, the Simon-Williamson Clinic, Urology Centers of Alabama and two doctors, Graves said. Spokeswomen for the hospital, the clinic and Urology Centers of Alabama did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Penis pumps cost U.S. government millions, watchdog cries waste

Penis pumps cost the U.S. government’s Medicare program $ 172 million between 2006 and 2011, about twice as much as the consumer would have paid at the retail level, according to a government watchdog’s report released on Monday. The report by the inspector general for the Department of Health and Human Services said Medicare, the government health insurance system for seniors, paid nearly 474,000 claims for vacuum erection systems, or VES, totaling about $ 172.4 million from 2006 to 2011. According to the Mayo Clinic, penis pumps are one of a few treatment options for erectile dysfunction. “Medicare payment amounts for VES remain grossly excessive compared with the amounts that non-Medicare payers pay,” said the report, dated December 2013.
