Mylan settles Viagra patent litigation with Pfizer

The Pfizer logo is seen at their world headquarters in New York(Reuters) – Drugmaker Mylan N.V said it settled a patent litigation with Pfizer Inc related to Viagra, paving the way for the launch of the drug's generic version in the United States once approved. Mylan said on Monday that the settlement would allow it to launch Sildenafil Citrate by December 2017, or sooner under certain conditions, subject to approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Pfizer's patent for Viagra, used to treat erectile dysfunction, expires in 2020. Mylan did not disclose other terms of the settlement, citing confidentiality, and added that the settlement and license agreement was subject to review by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.

Merck places children’s HIV drug in shared non-profit patent pool

U.S. drugmaker Merck & Co has contributed an HIV medicine for children to an international shared patent pool in a move that should speed the development of cheap pediatric formulations for use in poor countries. The non-profit Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), which aims to persuade leading drug companies to share rights to their products with generic manufacturers, said on Tuesday the deal for Merck’s raltegravir would add to the treatment arsenal. Merck has not previously participated in the scheme.

GlaxoSmithKline’s AIDS drugs business is to add one of its latest HIV medicines to a patent pool – cutting its future price for developing countries and pooling intellectual property rights. ViiV Healthcare, which is majority owned by the British drugmaker, said the agreement covered dolutegravir, a new antiretroviral medicine, for use in both adults and children with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS. The move is a further victory for the new Medicines Patent Pool (MPP), which is trying to convince major drugmakers around the world to share rights to important medicines for developing countries with makers of cheap generic drugs.

An Indian government committee is reviewing patented drugs of foreign firms to see if so-called compulsory licenses, which in effect break exclusivity rights, can be issued for some of them to bring down costs, two senior government officials told Reuters. Emerging markets, from South Africa to China and India, are battling to bring down healthcare costs and boost access to drugs to treat diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Western drugmakers, including Pfizer Inc, Novartis AG, Roche Holding AG and Sanofi SA, covet a bigger share of the fast-growing drugs market in India.

Bristol adds medicine to patent pool for AIDS drugs

Bristol-Myers Squibb is to share intellectual property rights on an important HIV/AIDS drug in a patent pool designed to make treatments more widely available in poor countries. The licensing deal will enable generic drug firms around the world to produce affordable versions of atazanavir, which Bristol sells under the brand name Reyataz, and to combine it with other medicines to make treatment easier. The agreement announced on Thursday by the United Nations-backed Medicines Patent Pool is the first covering an HIV drug designed for use after patients develop resistance to initial treatments.
