Pet zebra shot and killed by owner in Florida after escaping

Pet zebra shot and killed by owner in Florida after escapingA man has shot and killed his pet zebra after it escaped from his ranch in Callahan, a town in Florida. The animal, reportedly named Shadow, broke free from Cottonwood Ranch and ran down a main road, chased by several vehicles.Witnesses said the zebra was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac around two miles from the ranch, where the owner shot and killed it.Bill Leeper, the local sheriff, said he understood that Shadow was injured during the escape and that the owner chose to euthanise the zebra while police officers were at the scene.Witnesses told WJXT-TV that the animal did not appear injured but the decision was made to kill it so that it could not hurt anyone.“I had to stop and think a minute,” Jenee Watkins told the news outlet.“It’s not every day you see a zebra trotting through your neighbourhood.”Officials have confirmed that the owner did not have a valid license to keep a zebra on his ranch.A state permit is required to own and keep a zebra in Florida. It is unclear whether he will face charges over the lack of permit.Officials said the investigation into the animal’s escape and death was ongoing.

New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft charged with soliciting prostitution

New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft charged with soliciting prostitutionRobert Kraft, one of the most powerful figures in US sport, has been charged with two counts of soliciting prostitution. Mr Kraft, the owner of Super Bowl winners New England Patriots, is one of 25 people facing similar charges following a lengthy investigation into human trafficking and money laundering across Florida. The 77-year-old sports magnate could, in theory, face a year in jail if convicted. However, announcing the misdemeanour charges, Palm Beach County state attorney Dave Aronberg said a custodial sentence was unlikely for a first time offender. Those convicted also face a mandatory $ 5,000 fine and being required to perform 100 hours of community service and attend a class on the dangers of prostitution and human trafficking. A spokesman for Mr Kraft said that he categorically denies the charges. It is alleged that police surveillance videos filmed Mr Kraft making two visits to the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida. The spa was one of several strip mall massage parlours targeted by police across Florida in a crackdown on human trafficking. "These cases aren't about any one defendant or any group of defendants," added Mr Aronberg. "The larger picture which we must all confront is the cold reality that many prostitutes in cases like this are, themselves, victims, often lured into this country with promises of a better life only to be forced to live and work in a sweatshop or a brothel, performing sex acts for strangers." Mr Kraft, who has a net worth estimated at $ 6.6 billion, could face sanctions from the NFL, with a spokesman saying its code of conduct applied equally to everybody involved with the league.

Tesla Model X owner caught sleeping on the highway with Autopilot turned on

Tesla Model X owner caught sleeping on the highway with Autopilot turned onA wild, if not disturbing, video that originally surfaced on Jalopnik shows a Tesla Model X owner taking a full-on snooze while his car drives down the highway. Tesla's Autopilot feature is of course activated but it's clearly not designed to let people fall asleep at the wheel. If anything, the Tesla driver in the video is so relaxed that he's not even at the wheel; he's full-on reclining.

The Model X in question was reportedly on a highway headed to Las Vegas and thankfully didn't get into any type of serious crash. Indeed, there have been cases where Tesla vehicles on Autopilot get into serious crashes even with a fully alert and attentive driver. Tesla, to its credit, began implementing safety measures around its Autopilot feature in response to Tesla owners abusing the feature in downright dangerous ways. In one widely circulated video that has since been removed from YouTube, a Model S owner a few years ago turned on Autopilot and actually went into the backseat while the Tesla handled all the driving.

The slo-mo video of the sleeping Tesla driver can be seen below.

While there's no denying that Tesla's Autopilot feature works well when used correctly — and has even been known to help save lives — some folks believe that the Autopilot name itself is misleading and can cause drivers to rely on the feature too heavily. A few months ago, for example, a consumer watchdog group penned a letter to the FTC arguing that the Autopilot name should be changed.

The letter reads in part:

> The marketing and advertising practices of Tesla, combined with Elon Musk's public statements, have made it reasonable for Tesla owners to believe, and act on that belief, that a Tesla with Autopilot is an autonomous vehicle capable of "self-driving
>
> …
>
> Tesla is the only automaker to market its Level 2 vehicles as "self-driving", and the name of its driver assistance suite of features, Autopilot, connotes full autonomy. In addition to these formal marketing and advertising ploys, Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, frequently misleads and deceives consumers about Autopilot's safety and capabilities.

There's no indication, however, that Tesla will tweak the Autopilot name in the slightest. At the time of the aforementioned letter, a Tesla spokesperson said that Tesla owners have a "very clear understanding of what Autopilot is, how to properly use it, and what features it consists of."
