Mexican president meets with Mormon massacre victims' families
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador met Monday with relatives of nine Mormon women and children who were massacred in northern Mexico last month to discuss progress in the investigation. The November 4 killing of three women and six children from a breakaway Mormon community with dual US-Mexican nationality, caused shock on both sides of the border, and increased pressure on Lopez Obrador’s government to show it is acting against brutal violence by drug cartels. “They presented the progress they’re making in the investigation and the cooperation between Mexico and the United States on the case,” one relative who attended the closed-door meeting, Lenzo Widmar, told AFP.
Mexico massacre unites Mormon sects, even their exiles
The 35-year-old Seattle homemaker had spent much of her life trying to keep away from her parents’ self-described fundamentalist branch of the Mormon faith and Colonia LeBaron – her polygamist father’s Mexico community where some of the massacre victims were from. “The massacre has simply allowed me to support and love family,” said Bostwick, a convert to Christianity, whose mother was 15 when she gave birth to her, and who was later adopted by her U.S. grandparents. The Nov. 4 killings have traumatized northern Mexico’s breakaway Mormon communities.
Remains of five more victims of Mexican Mormon killings are buried
Rancho La Mora (México) (AFP) – The remains of a Mormon woman and her four children murdered in northern Mexico were taken by road Friday from their home village to be buried in a family plot in Chihuahua state. A convoy of vehicles bearing the coffins of Rhonita Miller and her children left Rancho la Mora, in the border area between Mexico’s violent northern states of Sonora and Chihuahua, for the family’s burial plot in the LeBaron neighborhood in nearby Galeana. Miller and her children died with four other people in a hail of bullets Monday on a rural road in the lawless region.
