Agency could keep Three Mile Island nuclear debris in Idaho

Agency could keep Three Mile Island nuclear debris in IdahoThe partially melted reactor core from the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history could remain in Idaho for another 20 years if regulators finalize a license extension sought by the U.S. Energy Department, officials said Monday. The core from Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania partially melted in 1979, an event that changed the way Americans view nuclear technology. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has determined there would be no significant impact from extending the license to store the core at the 890-square-mile (2,305-square-kilometer) site that includes Idaho National Laboratory.

Woman survives plunging a mile after parachute fails to open

Woman survives plunging a mile after parachute fails to openA woman cheated death when she fell nearly a mile to the ground after her parachute and emergency back-up apparently both failed to open.Witnesses who saw her plunge nearly 5000ft to the ground said it was a miracle she wasn’t killed. She hit a clump of trees, breaking her fall, and escaped with only fractured bones, including broken vertebrae.Police Quebec in Canada are investigating whether there was any criminal negligence. After jumping from the plane at a skydiving centre in Trois-Rivieres, the woman escaped with her life by hitting a wooded area.Denis Demers, who saw her fall, told Radio-Canada: "It’s a miracle. I don’t know how a person can survive a fall from an airplane like that."He said it appeared that neither the main parachute nor the emergency back-up had opened.Police told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that the 30-year-old parachutist, who has not yet been identified, was an experienced skydiver. She was admitted to hospital but her life was not in danger, they said.Another witness, Oceane Duplessis, said she was getting ready to get on another plane when she saw the woman."We watched all the way to the end. We kept hoping something would happen," she said. "We were very worried. Very."According to Scienceabc.com, a person without a parachute will fall at a typical speed of 120mph – or 60 metres (196ft) a second. The skydive company, which is reported to be investigating, has been contacted for comment.

Trump has not built single mile of new border wall since taking office

Trump has not built single mile of new border wall since taking officeIt was the controversial campaign promise that Donald Trump built his 2016 electoral success on: to build what he called a “big beautiful wall” on the US border with Mexico. But, two and half years after he took office, supporters – who were so enamoured by the idea, they regularly chanted in favour of the structure – may be forgiven for wondering where exactly it is.Now, it has emerged that not a single new stretch of border wall has been built since Mr Trump took office in January 2017.A statement released by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency confirmed the 51 miles of fencing completed since Mr Trump took power has simply replaced barriers that already existed. No original wall or fencing has been created in areas that previously did not have any, it said. That is despite the fact that a total of 205 miles of both new and replacement wall and fencing has already been budgeted for since Mr Trump took office – including via the Treasury Forfeiture Fund which the president redirected through controversial executive action in February.Speaking anonymously to the Washington Examiner, a senior official in the Trump administration said engineers could move faster on so-called replacement projects than entirely new stretches of fence because the approval process for environmental and zoning permits was less extensive.Another official blamed Democrats for obstructing progress. He told the newspaper: “The wall projects are moving along as quickly as practicably possible given the unprecedented obstruction from Democrat lawmakers to protect and prolong open borders.”Yet it seems the lack of progress will not deter Mr Trump from making the wall a central part of his 2020 election campaign. When crowds took up their now familiar refrain of “build that wall" at a recent rally in El Paso, Texas, Mr Trump responded by telling them: “Now, you really mean 'finish that wall,' because we've built a lot of it.”The CBP recently said it will be continuing to build the approximately 205 miles of wall that have been funded so far this year, using Treasury Forfeiture Fund money that Mr Trump seized in February after the partial government shutdown. The Trump administration was sued for taking $ 6.6bn from the military and other departments to be used for building the border wall after Congress refused to grant the president the money he had requested.

Fisker’s Tesla competitor has 400 mile range and charges in just 9 minutes

Fisker’s Tesla competitor has 400 mile range and charges in just 9 minutesHenrik Fisker is a bit of a legend in the automotive design world, so when he announced that he was working on an all-new electric vehicle that would both challenge Tesla's Model S, and serve as the spiritual successor to the Fisker Karma, there was plenty of interest. Fisker first teased the new car in late 2016, but now we have our first real look at the vehicle and it sure is fancy.

twitter.com/FiskerOfficial/status/873584846324379648

The car, called the Fisker EMotion, will be the first vehicle under the newly formed Fisker Inc. — Fisker sold his Fisker Automotive brand in early 2014, and it was subsequently renamed Karma Automotive — and is one of two planned electric cars from the company, with the second unnamed vehicle being designed for mass market appeal rather than the luxury sector like the EMotion.

The EMotion is definitely a sleek, beautiful car, but what should really get electric car buffs excited is the technology that is packed into it. Fisker says the vehicle is designed with a 400-mile range in mind — beating the sub-350-mile range of the Tesla Model S handily — as well as a fast-charging feature that will allow it to juice up in just nine minutes. That's incredibly fast, but Fisker says the car relies on patent-pending battery technology designed by researchers at UCLA, and abandons the typical lithium-ion battery trend in favor of supercapacitors using graphene.

The car has a top speed of 161 miles per hour, and will be capable of driving autonomously, though its self-driving capabilities may not be activated until after its retail launch. Pricing and other minor details are still unclear.
