Soweto pays final respects to Winnie Mandela

Soweto pays final respects to Winnie MandelaHundreds of people lined the streets of Soweto on Friday to see the funeral procession of Winnie Mandela ahead of her final send-off this weekend. A black hearse carrying the body of Mandela, one of the most divisive figures in the anti-apartheid struggle, slowly drove to her house led by uniformed men bearing the flag of her African National Congress (ANC) party. Mandela, who died in Johannesburg aged 81 on April 2 after a long illness, was celebrated for keeping her husband Nelson Mandela’s dream of a non-racial South Africa alive during his 27-year imprisonment.

S.Africa bids emotional farewell to 'Mama Winnie' Mandela

S.Africa bids emotional farewell to 'Mama Winnie' MandelaThousands of mourners flocked Wednesday to the heart of South Africa’s sprawling Soweto township, a centre of anti-apartheid resistance, to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s former wife and struggle hero Winnie Mandela. The choice of Soweto’s 37,000-capacity Orlando stadium for both the memorial service and the full state funeral planned for Saturday was highly symbolic. Unlike many struggle-era leaders who moved from townships like Soweto to formerly white suburbs after apartheid fell, Winnie Mandela remained embedded in the community where she met Nelson Mandela at a bus stop in 1957.

Winnie Mandela, 'mother', then 'mugger', of new South Africa

Winnie Mandela, 'mother', then 'mugger', of new South AfricaBy Ed Cropley JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Hailed as mother of the ‘new’ South Africa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s legacy as an anti-apartheid heroine was undone when she was revealed to be a ruthless ideologue prepared to sacrifice laws and lives in pursuit of revolution and redress. The contradiction helped kill their marriage and destroyed the esteem in which she was held by many South Africans, although the firebrand activist retained the support of radical black nationalists to the end. In her twilight years, Madikizela-Mandela, who died on Monday aged 81, had frequent run-ins with authority that further undermined her reputation as a fighter against the white-minority regime that ran Africa’s most advanced economy from 1948 to 1994.

Ahmed Kathrada, anti-apartheid activist and Mandela prison mate

Ahmed Kathrada, anti-apartheid activist and Mandela prison mateSouth Africa’s anti-apartheid icon Ahmed Kathrada, who was jailed alongside Nelson Mandela, was feted as a humble liberation hero who shunned the power and glory that came with freedom. Unlike many struggle veterans, Kathrada, who was imprisoned on Robben Island, never held public political office after the fall of apartheid and Mandela’s election as president in 1994. When Mandela left office in 1999, after serving a single four-year term, Kathrada also stepped away from politics — immersing himself in activism through his Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
