Biden Leads USA Today/Suffolk Iowa Poll; Sanders, Buttigieg Next
(Bloomberg) — Joe Biden leads the Democratic field in Iowa, according to a USA Today/Suffolk poll, with 25% support. Bernie Sanders was second at 19%, followed by Pete Buttigieg in third at 18%.It’s a better result for the former vice president than an NYT/Siena survey out Saturday, which showed Sanders in first and Biden trailing Buttigieg in third place. Elizabeth Warren was fourth and Amy Klobuchar fifth in both polls.Yet taken together, both surveys show a fluid Democratic field a week before Iowa caucuses. RealClearPolitics, aggregating recent surveys in Iowa, showed Biden and Sanders essentially tied ahead of the USA Today survey’s release.Under Iowa’s unique caucus system, voters’ backup plans could be decisive. If a candidate doesn’t reach 15% support in a local area, they aren’t considered viable, their votes won’t tally and supporters are encouraged to pick someone else.Yet there’s no clear indication where the supporters of lesser-polling candidates might wind up. Three quarters of those supporting a candidate outside the top five were undecided about their next choice. The USA Today/Suffolk poll surveyed 500 likely Democratic caucusgoers from Jan. 23-26, with an error margin plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. To contact the reporter on this story: Derek Wallbank in Singapore at dwallbank@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Chua Baizhen at bchua14@bloomberg.net, Steve GeimannFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.
Prosecutor: DNA match leads to Florida 'pillowcase rapist'
Prosecutors announced Thursday that a sophisticated DNA match has led to the cold case arrest of a Florida man believed to be the “pillowcase rapist” who terrorized greater Miami with a series of assaults on women in the 1980s. Robert Koehler, 60, was arrested over the weekend and was being held without bond Thursday in a Miami jail. The “pillowcase rapist” was so named because he used a pillowcase or other fabric to cover the faces of his terrified victims, usually after he had broken into an apartment or town home, according to investigators.

Texas man to be exonerated after DNA leads to new arrest
Authorities said they will begin the process to exonerate a Houston man who was convicted in a 2010 fatal stabbing that investigators now believe was committed by someone else. Lydell Grant, 42, was freed on bond last month after a new analysis of DNA found on the victim’s fingernails pointed to his innocence in the killing of 28-year-old Aaron Scheerhoorn. Authorities undertook a new investigation, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said Friday that Grant has been eliminated as a suspect and another person has been arrested in Scheerhoorn’s slaying.

4 dead after US jewelry heist leads to carjacking, chase, shootout
Two armed jewelry thieves trying to escape the scene of their heist on Thursday hijacked a delivery truck, took its driver hostage, then led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a deadly shootout, authorities in the US state of Florida said. Four people were killed in the gunbattle on a busy street — the two suspects, the driver of the United Parcel Service truck, and a bystander, FBI agent George Piro said. The events began as two armed suspects robbed a jewelry store in Coral Gables, near Miami, late Thursday afternoon, Piro said.
