Manafort trial – live updates: Robert Mueller's team ask Rick Gates discussion to be kept secret to protect Russia investigation

Manafort trial - live updates: Robert Mueller's team ask Rick Gates discussion to be kept secret to protect Russia investigationAfter three days of dramatic testimony in the trial of Paul Manafort,, prosecutors returned on Thursday to the nuts and bolts of their case against Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman as they sought to show he obtained millions of dollars in bank loans under false pretenses. Attorneys for special counsel Robert Mueller also got a rare — and narrow — acknowledgement from Judge TS Ellis III that he likely erred when he angrily confronted them a day earlier over whether he had allowed a witness to watch the trial. The judge’s comments and detailed testimony about Mr Manafort’s loans opened the eighth day of his trial as prosecutors began presenting the bulk of their bank fraud case against him after spending days largely on tax-evasion allegations.

Donald Trump says attorney general Jeff Sessions must end ‘rigged’ Russia investigation

Donald Trump says attorney general Jeff Sessions must end ‘rigged’ Russia investigationDonald Trump has called on his attorney general Jeff Sessions to end the Russian election meddling investigation, once again ramping up the rhetoric on the probe overshadowing his presidency.  The US president also distanced himself from Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman on trial for bank fraud and tax evasion, noting they only worked together for a “very short time”.  The early morning tweets came with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential campaign once again in the headlines.  Mr Manafort appeared in court on Tuesday – the first time someone indicted by the Mueller probe has stood trial. It is being seen as a key early test for the investigation.  Mr Mueller was appointed to lead the investigation after Mr Trump fired James Comey as FBI director in May 2017. The FBI had been probing the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia since before the election.  Mr Trump tweeted on Wednesday: ..This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2018 He also wrote:  Paul Manafort worked for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other highly prominent and respected political leaders. He worked for me for a very short time. Why didn’t government tell me that he was under investigation. These old charges have nothing to do with Collusion – a Hoax!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2018 Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, said of Mr Trump’s call for the Russia probe to be closed: “It’s not an order, it’s the president’s opinion.” "The president's not obstructing, he's fighting back," said Sanders, dismissing the idea Mr Trump's tweets could be tantamount to obstruction of justice. Rudy Giuliani, the president's lawyer, also stressed Mr Trump was just issuing an opinion, though he also said the White House believed "the investigation should be brought to a close." "I guess, if we were playing poker – we're not – put up or shut up, what do you got?" Mr Giuliani said. "We have every reason to believe they don't have anything." Mr Trump later suggested that Mr Manafort was being “treated worse” than Al Capone, the Mafia boss, despite not yet being convicted of a crime. Mr Manafort has been in jail ahead of the trial for alleged witness tampering.  Capone, one of America’s most notorious mobsters, was eventually brought down through a successful prosecution for tax evasion in 1931.  Mr Trump had avoided directly criticising the Mueller probe during 2017, reportedly under the advice of his lawyers. However he has issued a series of escalating direct attacks on the special counsel in recent months.  The president has suggested Mr Mueller, who led the FBI from 2001 to 2013, has a conflict of interest on the Russia case and has picked a series of lawyers who are politically biased against the Republicans.  Mr Mueller is looking into obstruction of justice claims and probing contacts the Trump campaign had with Russian-linked figures before the 2016 vote. Others topics, such as Russian hacking before the election, are also being investigated.  Mr Sessions has recused himself from the Russia probe, meaning his number two, Rod Rosenstein, oversees the investigation. That means Mr Sessions is unlikely to be able to act on the president’s demand at present.  Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa. I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt. We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy. pic.twitter.com/IhSRw5Ui3R— Jim Acosta (@Acosta) August 1, 2018 The pair, close during the election campaign, have fallen out spectacularly over Mr Sessions’s decision to wash his hands of the Russia inquiry – to the fury of the president.  Mr Trump is increasingly turning his mind to the November 2018 mid-term elections, which will see all members of the House of Representatives and some US senators face the voters.  On Tuesday evening, Mr Trump led a rally in Florida and brushed off criticism of his leadership style, saying: “Anybody can act presidential.”  He said he liked to “be a little wild, have a little fun” during rallies, adding that it is “a lot easier to act presidential than do what I do”.  Mr Trump also said he was responsible for department stores bringing back “Merry Christmas” signs and claimed voters in the area needed identification to “buy groceries” – something which was disputed by others.  The rally also made headlines for the boos and chanting targeted at Jim Acosta, CNN’s chief white house correspondent, whom Mr Trump has singled out for criticism in the past.  Mr Trump later shared a video of the hostile heckling on his Twitter feed.
