China punishes hospital staff after patients infected with HIV, hepatitis B

Staff at two Chinese hospitals have been punished after their failure to follow proper medical procedures caused 14 patients to be infected with HIV and hepatitis B, state media reported on Friday. The two separate incidents are the latest to shake public trust in China’s healthcare system, the image of which has been hit in recent years by cases involving bribes and the use of unapproved treatments. In the first case, five people were infected with human immunodeficiency virus, the virus that causes AIDS, at a hospital in coastal Zhejiang province after a staff worker reused a tube during an unspecified procedure, the China Daily newspaper said, citing health authorities.

Buyers clubs for cheaper drugs help fight hepatitis and HIV

Nutland shows off some of his generic drugs during an interview with Reuters at his home in central LondonBy Ben Hirschler LONDON (Reuters) – Frustrated by the high price of antiviral drugs, thousands of patients from London to Moscow to Sydney are turning to a new wave of online "buyers clubs" to get cheap generic medicines to cure hepatitis C and protect against HIV infection. While regulators warn that buying drugs online is risky, scientific data presented at a recent medical conference suggest that treatment arranged through buyers club can be just as effective as through conventional channels. Will Nutland, who supports a drug-buying network in London and takes Indian-made generic drugs that are not available through the health service to prevent HIV infection, thinks the latest research will build confidence in such schemes.

Hepatitis C rates jump in four central Appalachian states: CDC

Rates of hepatitis C infections more than tripled in four Appalachian states from 2006 to 2012, fueled by prescription drug abuse among those who inject drugs, especially in rural areas, U.S. health officials said on Thursday. In those four states alone, hepatitis C infections rose 364 percent from 2006 to 2012. The CDC warned that while rates of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are currently low in these four states, the increase in hepatitis C infections raises concerns about HIV infections, which are also often spread by contaminated needles. Hepatitis C is a contagious liver infection spread primarily through contact with the blood of an infected person.
