Hannity and Manafort’s Gushing Text Messages Revealed: ‘We Are All on the Same Team’

Hannity and Manafort’s Gushing Text Messages Revealed: ‘We Are All on the Same Team’Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast / Photo GettyThroughout Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecution of Paul Manafort, he found a willing and enthusiastic ally and confidante: Fox News host and presidential pal Sean Hannity. On Friday, a D.C. federal judge released dozens of pages of private text messages between the former Trump campaign chairman and Hannity, who at one point offered “anything I can do to help.”The messages show Hannity apparently reached out shortly after the FBI raided Manafort’s Alexandria, Virginia apartment in August 2017. Hannity checked in on Manafort throughout the course of the special counsel’s investigation and prosecution of him, asking if he was OK. Like many other higher-ups in Trump’s orbit, Manafort maintained a friendly relationship with Hannity during the 2016 election and kept in touch after he left the Trump campaign in August 2016.  The special counsel’s office charged Manafort with tax and bank fraud counts in Virginia and tried him in a separate case in Washington, D.C. for acting as an unregistered foreign agent, money laundering and obstruction of justice. Trump to Hannity: You’re ‘Not Really’ a Patriot, You Just Want ‘Great Ratings’Hannity spent large portions of his texts with Manafort discussing (and rehashing) episodes of his own television show. He complained about never-Trumpers, Hillary Clinton, and the special counsel’s investigation. Hannity also repeatedly invited Manafort on TV, saying it would give to defend himself against Mueller’s prosecutors. Hannity told Manafort to connect him with his lawyer to get information on important developments. Manafort repeatedly declined, citing a court gag order restricting him from publicly discussing his case. But the text messages were perhaps the most blatant behind-the-scenes look at how cozy the host was with Manafort, the subject of hours of news coverage on Fox and Hannity’s show in particular.Hannity in one instance declared he was “NOT a fair weather friend,” and told Manafort how unfairly he believed he was being treated. “We are all on the same team,” he said. Manafort also had plenty of compliments for Hannity, saying he was on “fire,” “great” on radio, and declared that “in a fair world, you would get a Pulitzer prize for your incredible reporting.” He said he loved Hannity’s interview with former Trump adviser Roger Stone, and in one instance, Manafort said he watched the show with his three month old grandson, who was apparently mesmerized.“I swear to God. He was totally focused. Your audience is growing demographically,” he said.“You help me keep my hope and sanity,” Manafort said on another occasion. And throughout the investigation and trial, Hannity repeatedly publicly called for the charges against Manafort to be dropped. Hannity even hinted at insider knowledge of attempts to retaliate against those involved in the Russia investigation. When Manafort said he hoped that then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions would appoint a new special counsel to investigate the Russia inquiry, Hannity texted “He has to [do] it [or else] he is gone. Talked to a friend.” While it’s unclear who Hannity was talking about, he often speaks to Trump. After the text messages were revealed on Friday, Hannity appeared to shrug them off, writing on Twitter that his views on the Russia investigation and Manafort “were made clear every day to anyone who listens to my radio show or watches my TV show.” Manafort is currently serving a 7.5-year prison sentence after he was found guilty of financial crimes by a Virginia jury and plead plead guilty to conspiracy to obstruct justice and defraud the United States in a separate D.C. case.Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Hannity Warns Iran: ‘You’re Going to Get the Living Crap Bombed Out of You’

Hannity Warns Iran: ‘You’re Going to Get the Living Crap Bombed Out of You’Fox News host Sean Hannity kicked off his show Thursday night by promising President Trump would “bomb the hell of out Iran” for downing an American drone and lashing out at a fellow Fox News personality who advocated for restraint. Shortly after Fox News’ Tucker Carlson—who has been privately advising the president against war with Iran—praised Trump for initially resisting calls for military action, Hannity took a completely different approach, insisting that Iran has essentially left Trump no choice.“A strong message needs to be sent that a huge price will be paid if you take on the United State of America,” Hannity declared. “Simple peace through strength, and it works.”Following his short monologue, the pro-Trump primetime star welcomed on Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera, who immediately noted that Iran claims they “have absolute, undeniable proof” that the drone they shot down was over territorial waters. Hannity, meanwhile, wanted to hear none of it.“They shot an American drone out of the air, they are not getting away with it,” he huffed. As Rivera attempted to make the point that Iran may not be in the wrong if the drone was indeed over their airspace, Hannity said Trump was “very clear” that the aircraft was over international waters before claiming Iran wants to wipe “the United States off the map” and is “fomenting terror.”Rivera, for his part, cautioned against rushing into “another military conflict,” prompting Hannity to clarify that he just wanted the U.S. military to shoot missiles and drop bombs on Iran.“If you shoot an American missile or a drone out of the air and you attack tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, you’re going to get the living crap bombed out of you,” Hannity declared. The Fox host, who is reportedly referred to as the White House shadow chief of staff, went on to argue with Rivera some more, at one point describing Iranians as “radical terrorists” who “killed our boys in Iraq” when Rivera suggested a renegotiation of the 2015 nuclear deal that Trump pulled out of. “What has happened to you?!” Hannity yelled at one point to Rivera.“I want the next generation of military weaponry so we can’t let these idiots in Washington, they have to be able to blow them out of the water and they must pay to take out a drone in international waters,” he continued. “I’m not believing a word that these lying mullahs say!”Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Trump to Hannity: Russia Investigation ‘Was a Coup’ and ‘Attempted Overthrow’ of Government

Trump to Hannity: Russia Investigation ‘Was a Coup’ and ‘Attempted Overthrow’ of GovernmentIn his first television interview since the release of the redacted version of the Mueller report, President Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday night that the investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election was a “coup” and an “attempted overthrow of the United States government.”Trump, who has largely avoided reporters since last week's release of the special counsel's report revealed at least 10 instances of possible obstruction of justice, called his good friend Hannity to discuss the findings. Or, more accurately, to rant to a pro-Trump audience about how there was “no collusion” and it's time for some payback.Having begun his broadcast by hyping a new Fox News story about texts previously released last year between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, the conservative primetime star said he disagreed with the president when he said at the beginning of his presidency that he wanted to move past investigating 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.“Do you regret saying that?” Hannity asked, expressing an urgent need to get to the bottom of Clinton's private email server, something Hannity described last week as a current threat to national security.“No, I don't regret saying it,” Trump replied. “When I won, they were all saying lock her up. Lock her up. I said no, no. Let's get on with life. That was different.”Trump went on to claim that he felt differently now because shortly after the election, “they started coming at us with the insurance policy,” referring to the Russia probe. After railing against the investigation into Clinton's email server and claiming Clinton “destroyed” lives, the president called former FBI officials James Comey and Andrew McCabe “dirty cops.”“This was a coup,” Trump exclaimed. “This was an attempted overthrow of the United States government… This was an overthrow and it's a disgraceful thing.”The president also revisited his unsubstantiated March 2017 claim that President Obama had wiretapped him at Trump Tower during the election, boasting to Hannity that his assertion had received attention “like you've never seen” while admitting that it was based only on a “little bit of a hunch.”Trump said the claim “blew up because they thought maybe I was wise to them.”During his congressional testimony earlier this month, Attorney General William Barr prompted Democratic backlash when he said he believed “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign during 2016, remarks he would somewhat walk back later.Read more at The Daily Beast.
