Hawaii volcano eruption latest: Locals fear geothermal power station well could explode after being covered in lavaA potentially explosive well at a geothermal power station on Hawaii has been covered by lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano after it flowed onto the site. Lava has never engulfed a geothermal power plant anywhere in the world and the potential threat is untested, according to the head of the state’s emergency management agency. David Ige, the governor of Hawaii, said the geothermal plant was “sufficiently safe” from the lava, which has burned dozens of homes.

Lava covers potentially explosive well at Hawaii geothermal plant

Lava covers potentially explosive well at Hawaii geothermal plantBy Jolyn Rosa HONOLULU (Reuters) – Lava from Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea volcano has covered a potentially explosive well at a geothermal power station and threatened another, after flowing onto the site, officials said. The Hawaii Civil Defense Agency said the wells “are stable and secure”, and Hawaii Governor David Ige said that the plant was “sufficiently safe” from the lava that has plowed through backyards and streets and burned dozens of homes. Hawaii volcano belches new ash plume as geothermal wells secured from harm

Hawaii volcano belches new ash plume as geothermal wells secured from harmBy Marco Garcia VOLCANO, Hawaii (Reuters) – The restive Kilauea Volcano belched clouds of ash into the skies over Hawaii’s Big Island twice more on Wednesday as civil defense authorities reported that pressurized geothermal wells at a nearby power plant had been secured from approaching lava. The latest back-to-back upheavals of ash from the main summit crater of Kilauea — one before dawn and another several hours later — came on the 21st day of what geologists rank as one of the biggest eruption cycles in a century from one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The Hawaii County Civil Defense agency warned in its latest bulletin that residents downwind of Kilauea should take care to avoid exposure to ash, which can cause eye irritation and breathing difficulties, particularly in people with respiratory problems.

Hawaii lava approaches geothermal power plant

Hawaii lava approaches geothermal power plantBy Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) – Lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island flowed towards a geothermal power plant on Monday as workers scrambled to shut it down to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases. It was the latest danger from Mount Kilauea’s eruption, which geologists says is among the worst events in a century from one of the world’s most active volcanoes. “We do want to shut down the wells so that we would eliminate the broader risk of uncontrolled release,” of gases and steam from the plant, Hawaii Governor David Ige told reporters on Sunday.
