Japan's Tepco gets slapped with new U.S. lawsuit over Fukushima

Japan's Tepco gets slapped with new U.S. lawsuit over FukushimaTokyo Electric Power Co Holdings said on Thursday it has been hit with another lawsuit filed in a U.S. court seeking $ 5 billion for compensation over the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, the second filed against the utility in a U.S. court. The suit filed by 157 individuals is seeking that amount to set up a compensation fund for the costs of medical tests and treatment they say they need after efforts to support the recovery from the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. The utility, known as Tepco, is being sued regarding improper design, construction and maintenance, claiming compensation for physical, mental and economic damages, the company said in a statement.

Fukushima reactor 'ice wall' nearly finished

Fukushima reactor 'ice wall' nearly finishedFukushima’s operator on Tuesday started freezing the last section of a $ 320 million ice wall designed to combat widespread water contamination at the site of the worst nuclear accident in a generation. Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) began pumping coolant into the remaining seven metres (23 feet) of its 1.5-kilometre underground wall which encircles the four reactors along Japan’s northeast coast. The 30-metre deep wall is designed to block underground water from nearby mountains from flowing into the shattered complex and then seeping into the Pacific.

Robot finds possible melted fuel inside Fukushima reactor

Robot finds possible melted fuel inside Fukushima reactorLava-like rocks believed to be melted nuclear fuel have been spotted inside Japan’s stricken Fukushima reactor by an underwater robot, the plant’s operator said at the end of a three-day inspection. Large amounts of the solidified lumps and deposit were spotted for the first time by the robot on the floor of the primary containment vessel underneath the core of Fukushima’s No. 3 reactor, the Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said. “There is a high possibility that the solidified objects are mixtures of melted metal and fuel that fell from the vessel,” a TEPCO spokesman said, adding that the company was planning further analysis of the images.

Underwater robot probes inside Fukushima reactor

Underwater robot probes inside Fukushima reactorThe operator of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Friday it is using an underwater robot in a renewed attempt to inspect damage suffered in a tsunami-induced meltdown. A massive undersea earthquake on March 11, 2011 sent a huge wave barrelling into Japan’s northeast coast, killing more than 18,500 people, and sending three reactors into meltdown at the plant in the worst such accident since Chernobyl in 1986. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) in February sent a remote-controlled robot into one of three damaged reactors where radiation levels have hit record highs.

Fishermen express fury as Fukushima plant set to release radioactive material into ocean

Fishermen express fury as Fukushima plant set to release radioactive material into oceanLocal residents and environmental groups have condemned a plan to release radioactive tritium from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. Officials of Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant, say tritium poses little risk to human health and is quickly diluted by the ocean. In an interview with local media, Takashi Kawamura, chairman of TEPCO, said: "The decision has already been made." He added, however, that the utility is waiting for approval from the Japanese government before going ahead with the plan and is seeking the understanding of local residents. fukushima timeline The tritium is building up in water that has been used to cool three reactors that suffered fuel melt-downs after cooling equipment was destroyed in the magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami that struck north-east Japan in March 2011. Around 770,000 tons of highly radioactive water is being stored in 580 tanks at the site. Many of the contaminants can be filtered out, but the technology does not presently exist to remove tritium from water. "This accident happened more than six years ago and the authorities should have been able to devise a way to remove the tritium instead of simply announcing that they are going to dump it into the ocean", said Aileen Mioko-Smith, an anti-nuclear campaigner with Kyoto-based Green Action Japan. Takashi Kawamura, chairman of Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings Inc. (Tepco), speaks during a group interview at the company's headquarters in Tokyo Credit: Bloomberg "They say that it will be safe because the ocean is large so it will be diluted, but that sets a precedent that can be copied, essentially permitting anyone to dump nuclear waste into our seas", she told The Telegraph. Fishermen who operate in waters off the plant say any release of radioactive material will devastate an industry that is still struggling to recover from the initial nuclear disaster. "Releasing [tritium] into the sea will create a new wave of unfounded rumours, making all our efforts for naught", Kanji Tachiya, head of a local fishing cooperative, told Kyodo News.
