Hawaii volcano eruption: Earthquakes, lava flows and toxic gas could last for months, scientists warnThousands of people who were evacuated after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano continued to erupt are preparing for the possibility they may not return home for some time. The number of houses destroyed by lava shooting from openings in the ground created by the eruption has increased to five, while hundreds of small earthquakes have continued to rumble. Scientists forecast further eruptions and earthquakes, perhaps for months to come, after Big Island was rocked by a 6.9-magnitude tremor on Friday, the strongest the island has seen since 1975.

Hawaii volcano eruption: Dozens of homes destroyed by lava flows as thousands fleeThe number of homes destroyed by Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has risen to 26, with the thousands of residents who have been evacuated still none the wiser on when they might be able to return. Hawaii County officials said a further four unspecified buildings had also been destroyed by lava and warned that fissures created by the main eruption are also causing steam and toxic gasses to vent out unpredictably. Residents said the lava which threatens their homes and livelihoods was a “fact of life” when living at the foot of Kilauea (pronounced kill-ah-way-ah), one of the world’s most active volcanos.
