Hong Kong protests take a toll as companies flag impact

Hong Kong protests take a toll as companies flag impactCathay Pacific Airways Ltd and the owner of Hong Kong’s luxury Peninsula hotel became the latest companies to highlight the impact of recent protests on their business, as an escalating cycle of violence clouds the outlook for the city. Millions have taken to Hong Kong streets in anti-government protests that have intensified since mid-June, at times forcing banks, stores, shopping malls, restaurants and even government buildings to close as the demonstrations degenerated into violent clashes between police and activists. Hong Kong’s flagship airline, Cathay Pacific, said on Wednesday the protests reduced inbound passenger traffic in July and travellers were weighing on forward bookings, as it reported it swung to a half-year profit.

UPDATE 1-Panama says withdrawing flag from tanker towed to Iran, cites violations

UPDATE 1-Panama says withdrawing flag from tanker towed to Iran, cites violationsPanama’s maritime authority said on Saturday it had begun the process of withdrawing the registration of an oil tanker called MT Riah, which was towed to Iran after it disappeared from ship tracking maps in the Strait of Hormuz on July 14. Panama began the flag withdrawal process on Friday after an investigation determined the tanker had “deliberately violated international regulations” by not reporting any unusual situation, the authority said in a statement. Panama, which has the largest shipping fleet in the world, has recently withdrawn flags from dozens of vessels, some of which were operated by Iran.

Police investigate after US flag removed during protest

Police investigate after US flag removed during protestPolice say they will be reviewing any available video to help them identify protesters who trespassed and pulled down the American flag in front of an immigration detention center in suburban Denver, tried to burn it and replaced it with a Mexican flag. Friday night’s protest in Aurora, one of many coordinated across the country, drew about 2,000 people and was mostly peaceful. Cristian Solano-Cordova, a spokesman for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, told The Denver Post that those who pulled down the flags weren’t affiliated with mainstream immigrants’ rights groups but had coordinated with them to be there.

Trump fans in violent clashes with communists after American flag burned outside White House during 4th of July celebrations

Trump fans in violent clashes with communists after American flag burned outside White House during 4th of July celebrationsTwo people have been arrested after a violent clash between Trump supporters and a group of communists following a flag burning in front of the White House yesterday.Protesters wearing t-shirts of Bob Avakian, chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA, burned the American flag while chanting “America was never great” before fighting with counter-protesters wearing MAGA hats, according to USA Today. The arrests came about two hours before Donald Trump paid tribute to the US military during a speech for his “Salute to America” event for Fourth of July. The US Secret Service said one person was arrested for felony assault on a police officer and malicious burning, while the other was arrested for hindering a police investigation and resisting arrest. Some of the pro-Trump counter-protesters identified themselves as members of the Proud Boys, a far-right group whose members describe themselves as “western chauvinists”.Two uniformed Secret Service officers also suffered minor injuries while attempting to make the arrests.Although it is not illegal to burn a US flag, the Secret Service said the burning occurred beyond the limits of a permit issued by the National Park Service. One of the arrested flag burners is believed to be Gregory “Joey” Johnson, a member of the Revolutionary Communist Party who won a court case in 1989 arguing that flag burning was protected speech under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.Speaking on 3 July outside the White House, Mr Johnson said: “[The US flag] is a symbol of empire, it’s a symbol of oppression, it’s a symbol of slavery, it’s a symbol of genocide, it’s a symbol of invasion, it’s a symbol of occupation, it’s a symbol of torture. This rag of empire deserves to be burned.”Mr Trump has been accused of wasting money with the Salute to America event and politicising the Fourth of July celebration ahead of his 2020 presidential campaign. The National Park Service diverted nearly $ 2.5m (£2m) in entrance and recreation fees intended for improving parks to cover costs for the event, according to the Washington Post. However, the full cost of the event, which was open to the public free of charge, has not been revealed.Despite the clashes earlier in the day, demonstrations at the Lincoln Memorial were largely peaceful.Protesters in Washington brought out the inflatable “Trump baby blimp”, last seen during Trump protests in London, and a 16-foot tall robot depicting Mr Trump sitting on golden toilet.

Fox News Anchor Julie Banderas Thinks It’s Illegal to Burn the American Flag

Fox News Anchor Julie Banderas Thinks It’s Illegal to Burn the American FlagFox News anchor Julie Banderas is apparently unaware of Texas v. Johnson. Towards the end of a discussion on the seemingly never-ending Nike/Betsy Ross flag controversy during Friday’s broadcast of chat-fest Outnumbered, the conversation shifted to the arrest of two men who burned an American flag outside the White House on July 4.“There was a video of somebody who stopped burning of the protest—I think it was yesterday—with his hands,” co-host Carley Shimkus said. “It means a lot to a lot of people.”Banderas, meanwhile, noted that two people were arrested after the protest before adding a bit of commentary.“And it’s a crime to burn the American flag,” she declared. “That’s how much we respect our American flag.”While it is true that two men were arrested following the flag-burning, the U.S. Secret Service noted that one person was arrested for “felony assault on a police officer and malicious burning.” As they pointed out, while the burning of the American flag is not illegal, the burning occurred outside the parameters of the protesters’ permit issued by the National Parks Service.Ironically, one of the men arrested was Gregory “Joey” Johnson, who was the defendant in the landmark Texas v. Johnson Supreme Court case in 1989 that ruled flag-burning was protected speech under the First Amendment, invalidating then-current laws on the book prohibiting flag desecration.Despite tossing out this explicit falsehood, she went unchallenged by her colleagues, including guest host Dean Cain, who bragged during the broadcast that he majored in history.Later in the day, filling in for Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, Banderas introduced a segment on Johnson's arrest by noting that "it is not technically illegal to burn a flag due to free speech and the Constitution." She did not, however, mention how she had incorrectly labeled flag-burning a crime earlier that afternoon. Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Flag comes down on U.S. Palestinian mission in Jerusalem

Flag comes down on U.S. Palestinian mission in JerusalemThe Palestinians, who have boycotted the Trump administration since it shifted long-standing U.S. policy in December 2017 by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, voiced anger at what they see as Washington’s latest move against them. Whereas previously the consulate reported on Palestinian matters directly to Washington, its staff have now been repurposed in the embassy as a “Palestinian Affairs Unit” under the U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman. Israeli-Palestinian talks collapsed in 2014 and the White House says it intends to present a new peace plan after a national election in Israel in April.

US flag flies in Syria's Manbij despite pullout notice

US flag flies in Syria's Manbij despite pullout noticeThe Stars and Stripes fluttered above four US armoured vehicles driving through drizzle in the Syrian city of Manbij Sunday, each visibly carrying an armed soldier on lookout duty. The US patrol inside the strategic city near the Turkish border comes despite President Donald Trump’s shock announcement this month that he is pulling American troops out of the war-torn country. Almost eight years into Syria’s civil war, a Kurdish-led alliance called the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) controls a large swathe of territory in the country’s northeast, including Manbij.
