Pet zebra shot and killed by owner in Florida after escaping

Pet zebra shot and killed by owner in Florida after escapingA man has shot and killed his pet zebra after it escaped from his ranch in Callahan, a town in Florida. The animal, reportedly named Shadow, broke free from Cottonwood Ranch and ran down a main road, chased by several vehicles.Witnesses said the zebra was eventually cornered in a cul-de-sac around two miles from the ranch, where the owner shot and killed it.Bill Leeper, the local sheriff, said he understood that Shadow was injured during the escape and that the owner chose to euthanise the zebra while police officers were at the scene.Witnesses told WJXT-TV that the animal did not appear injured but the decision was made to kill it so that it could not hurt anyone.“I had to stop and think a minute,” Jenee Watkins told the news outlet.“It’s not every day you see a zebra trotting through your neighbourhood.”Officials have confirmed that the owner did not have a valid license to keep a zebra on his ranch.A state permit is required to own and keep a zebra in Florida. It is unclear whether he will face charges over the lack of permit.Officials said the investigation into the animal’s escape and death was ongoing.

Jayme Closs to receive $25,000 reward after escaping captor herself

Jayme Closs to receive $ 25,000 reward after escaping captor herselfA 13-year-old girl who escaped after being held captive for 88 days is to receive the $ 25,000 (£19,00) reward for her return. Jayme Closs was found in rural Wisconsin on January 10 after managing to escape from the man who kidnapped her after killing her parents in mid-October.  The company Denise and James Closs had worked for, Hormel Foods, had offered the money to anyone with information leading to the teenager's return. The neighbours who found Jayme walking through the woods and contacted the police after her escape have agreed the money should go to her.  During the nationwide search for Jayme, the FBI had offered a $ 25,000 reward, which Hormel soon doubled to $ 50,000. Jayme's parents James and Denise were long-term employees of the company The company announced that they will now donate their share of the reward money to Jayme. The FBI has not released information about what will happen to the rest. Jim Snee, president of Hormel Foods, said that Jayme's parents were long-time employees Jennie-O, a turkey plant owned by Hormel Foods. In a statement, Mr Snee said the company was "overjoyed" at the news of her return, saying her "bravery and strength have truly inspired our team members around the world". The house Jayme was allegedly held in for 88 days Credit: Radar Online/MEGA  Mr Snee said the company hopes the $ 25,000 will be placed in a trust fund for the 13-year-old's present and future needs. Jayme disappeared from her home in Barron, Wisconsin on October 15, after suspect Jake Patterson allegedly stormed her house, shot and killed her parents, and abducted her. The 21-year-old is accused of keeping Jayme captive in his remote home in Gordon, some 66 miles from Barron. Jayme told detectives that on January 10, she was able to escape when Mr Patterson told her he would be gone for several hours.  She put on a pair of his shoes and fled the house on foot, eventually finding dog walker Jean Nutter who she asked for help.  Ms Nutter took the teenager to the home of Peter and Kristin Kasinskas, where they were able to contact police. The Kasinskas told CNN on Wednesday that they did not want the reward money. "Because she got herself out," Mrs Kasinskas said. Chris Fitzgerald, the sheriff of Barron County, said: "We also agree that Jayme is the hero in this case and are happy they have chosen her to receive the company's reward contribution."

Lion kills worker after escaping from enclosure at wildlife centre in US

Lion kills worker after escaping from enclosure at wildlife centre in US A lion killed a young worker at a wildlife conservatory in North Carolina on Sunday after it got loose from a locked space. Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed after being attacked by the animal in an enclosure that was being cleaned at the Conservators Centre, news outlets reported, citing a statement from the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office. The lion was shot and killed after attempts to tranquilise the animal failed, deputies said. A "husbandry team" led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out the routine cleaning when the lion somehow got loose, the centre said in a statement. It wasn’t clear how the lion escaped the area that was supposed to be locked, said the centre, which is closed until further notice. "This is the worst day of my life. We’ve lost a person. We’ve lost an animal. We have lost the faith in ourselves a little today," said Mindy Stinner, the executive director of the Conservators Center, according to WTVD-TV. Black had graduated from Indiana University in May with a degree in animal behaviour, according to her LinkedIn page. She had been working at the conservatory for about two weeks, her family said. "She was a beautiful young woman who had just started her career, there was a terrible accident, and we are mourning," Black’s family said in a statement, according to news outlets. "But, she died following her passion." The centre said the lion was fatally shot to allow county personnel to retrieve Black. The facility was founded in 1999 and is in Burlington, about 50 miles northwest of Raleigh. On its website, the centre said it began giving public tours in 2007 and gets more than 16,000 visitors annually. It has more than a dozen employees and currently houses more than 80 animals and more than 21 species. The centre says it took in 14 lions and tigers in 2004 to assist the US Department of Agriculture with caring for animals that were living in "unacceptable conditions."
