Trump renews attack on black congressman Elijah Cummings and says he should ‘investigate himself’

Trump renews attack on black congressman Elijah Cummings and says he should ‘investigate himself’Donald Trump has attacked a black US congressman about the city of Baltimore for the second time in less than a week.Elijah Cummings, whose congressional district covers approximately half of the Maryland city, should use his role as House Oversight Committee chairman to “investigate himself”, the US president claimed. Billions of dollars sent to tackle crime and boost Baltimore’s economy had been “stolen or wasted”, Mr Trump tweeted. He wrote that the city’s “numbers are the worst in the United States on Crime and the Economy.”He added: “Billions of dollars have been pumped in over the years, but to no avail. The money was stolen or wasted. Ask Elijah Cummings where it went. He should investigate himself with his Oversight Committee!”Mr Trump was criticised over the weekend for saying the congressman’s majority-black district in the Baltimore area was a “rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live”.But when he was accused of race-baiting, the president insisted there was nothing racist about his comments.Instead, he accused Mr Cummings of racism.“If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership,” he tweeted. He added: “His radical ‘oversight’ is a joke!”The remarks followed a weekend of attacks against Mr Cummings, who is leading number of congressional investigations into Mr Trump and his administration.Mr Trump claimed that the congressman’s district, which includes Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Social Security Administration and the national headquarters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is “considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States”.He later accused rival Democrats of trying to “play the race card”.He tweeted: “There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself.“Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!”Mr Trump has been repeatedly accused of racism in recent weeks after he attacked four Democratic congresswomen of colour known as “the squad”. He said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan should leave the US “right now”. He added that if they “hate our country” they can go back to their “broken and crime-infested” countries. All four Democrats are American citizens and only Ms Omar, who arrived in the US from Somalia at the age of seven, was not born in the US. He has also repeatedly attacked Mr Cummings. Earlier this week, he tweeted: “If the Democrats are going to defend the Radical Left ‘Squad’ and King Elijah’s Baltimore Fail, it will be a long road to 2020.”

Donald Trump escalates row over 'rat infested' Baltimore and its representative Elijah Cummings

Donald Trump escalates row over 'rat infested' Baltimore and its representative Elijah CummingsDonald Trump has escalated a row in which he accused a black Democrat congressman of failing Baltimore, a city the US president described as a "rat and rodent infested mess" where "no human being would want to live." Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, accused the US president of making "disgusting and racist" remarks and of having a "hate agenda". There was also anger in Baltimore itself. The local newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, declared: "Better to have some vermin living in your neighborhood than to be one." The White House said it was entirely fair for Mr Trump to attack the congressman, Elijah Cummings, because he had been a vocal critic of the president's immigration policies on the US-Mexico border, and had called for him to be impeached. Mr Trump said: "The Democrats always play the race card, when in fact they have done so little for our nation’s great African American people. "There is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore." Why is so much money sent to the Elijah Cummings district when it is considered the worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States. No human being would want to live there. Where is all this money going? How much is stolen? Investigate this corrupt mess immediately!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 27, 2019 Rep. Cummings responded that it was his "constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the executive branch." Political analysts said the latest race row was a further attempt by Mr Trump to enthuse his supporters, and push the Democrat party to the left, ahead of the 2020 election. It followed his recent attacks on the "Squad" - a group of four left-wing Democrat congresswomen. Mr Trump's poll ratings among Republicans rose after that row. Baltimore, which was at the centre of the new controversy, was the setting for the TV series "The Wire" which, over a decade ago, shocked many with its gritty depiction of drugs and poverty. More than half of Mr Cumming's district, which includes impoverished neighbourhoods in West Baltimore, is black.  People there expressed anger at Mr Trump, but also at their own elected city officials for not doing more. For block after block the area is blighted by dilapidated houses, some overgrown with weeds. Rubbish piles up in alleyways. The White House said it was entirely fair for Mr Trump to attack the congressman Credit: REX Yesterday, a man could be seen brazenly urinating on the pavement next to a school. A woman lay comatose on a doorstep, apparently under the influence of drugs. A prostitute, her teeth rotted by crack, was plying her trade at 10am with her pimp lurking nearby. Down the road two men were passing something furtively between them next to a church. A homeless man held a ragged teddy bear, and sign saying "feed my human". One enterprising resident had opened a streetside car wash using a burst water main. "Its worse here than it was 10 years ago. The police don't do anything, they just watch and wait for somebody to get shot," Kenneth Purnell, 52, a newspaper seller, said. Mr Purnell said he was "proud to be Baltimore" and the president should "represent us," but his anger was mainly directed at the city's mayor, Bernard Young. "The worst thing is the rats," he said. "They're more than a foot long and the tails longer than that. I've seen tens of them at a time. They come out of the abandoned buildings and run down the street in all the trash. You call the city and no-one comes. "People are scared to come out of their homes at night. Even in the day, because they're scared. You don't see a lot of people walking around do you?" Elijah Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through “Oversight.” He does NOTHING for his very poor, very dangerous and very badly run district! Take a look…. BlacksForTrump2020https://t.co/seNVESZUht— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 27, 2019 Standing outside a ramshackle church with iron bars on the windows, Renard Saunders, 48, who spent years homeless on the streets, said: "It has got worse. It's because drugs are so available. "We could go across the street right now and and it's right there. Fentanyl has taken over tin the last year. People are addicted to it, that's what's doing the damage. It declines you so fast," he said. Bernard Young, the Democrat mayor of Baltimore, said on Twitter: "It's completely unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American city like Baltimore. Mr Trump, you are a disappointment to the people of Baltimore, our country, and to the world." David Simon, the journalist who created The Wire, also attacked Mr Trump. He said: “If this empty-suit, race-hating fraud had to actually visit West Baltimore for five minutes and meet any of the American citizens who endure there, he’d wet himself." Mick Mulvaney, Mr Trump's acting chief of staff, said any congressman who allowed the kind of poverty that existed in Rep. Cummings' district to continue, should be fired. He said: "I think the president is right to raise that, it has absolutely zero to do with race."

Trump racist tweets: Democrat Elijah Cummings says constituents are ‘scared’ of president

Trump racist tweets: Democrat Elijah Cummings says constituents are ‘scared’ of presidentElijah Cummings rebuked Donald Trump’s continued attacks against four Democratic congresswomen of colour during an interview on Sunday, calling the president a racist and saying his constituents tell him they’re “scared of their leader”.The Maryland congressman spoke to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos about the House voting last week to condemn Mr Trump’s “racist comments” after the president told the congresswomen to “go back” to their countries – despite all four being US citizens and only one having been born outside the US. “What I’m hearing over and over again from my constituents, is ‘please save our democracy, please save our country,’” Mr Cummings said. “And you know something else they say George? They say ‘I’m scared.’”He added, “I have never in my total of 37 years in public service – ever, heard a constituent say that they were scared of their leader.”When asked if he believed the president was racist, Mr Cummings said, “Yes. No doubt about it.” He added, “I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I got to tell you George … when I think about what [Mr Trump] said to these young ladies who are merely trying to bring excellence to government and trying to make sure that generations yet unborn have an opportunity to experience a true democracy, when I hear those things it takes me back.”Mr Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, condemned Mr Trump’s attacks throughout last week as the president spent several days hurling insults towards Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley, claiming the congresswomen don’t love the United States. He said in a statement during the House vote last week he was “disappointed” the president “would share these racist sentiments,” adding, “We are still working to fight against redlining, voter intimidation, hate crimes, and mass incarceration. Our country deserves better than this. The world deserves better than this.”The congressman later recalled facing similar racist taunts as a child in an interview with NBC News. “I could not help but think about when I was 11 years old, trying to integrate … We were taunted. Stones were thrown at us. Bottles. They said the same words. They said, ‘Go back to your neighbourhood. Go back to where you came from.’”Mr Cummings’ statements echoed that of thousands Americans of colour who also recalled memories of being told to “go back” to where they came from.At least 16,000 people shared their experiences of dealing with the old racist trope to the New York Times after the president made the incendiary comments last week.
