U.N. seeks access to Syrians 'on their knees' in eastern Ghouta

U.N. seeks access to Syrians 'on their knees' in eastern GhoutaBy Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) – The U.N. humanitarian adviser for Syria called on Wednesday for access to the eastern Ghouta town of Douma, where he said some 80,000-150,000 civilians were “on their knees” after years of siege and fighting. Syrian government forces backed by Russia have recaptured nearly all of eastern Ghouta, which was the last major rebel enclave on the outskirts of Damascus, in a ferocious assault that began in February, marking a major victory for President Bashar al-Assad. “We hope that that agreement will lead to people being able to stay if they choose to, to get amnesty for those who put away their arms but also to an opportunity to leave for those who choose to leave Douma,” he told a news briefing.

The Ahrar al-Sham group’s decision to accept the army’s terms and abandon the town of Harasta puts the government on course for its biggest victory over rebels since the battle of Aleppo in 2016. After dark fell on Thursday, around 30 buses carrying rebel fighters and their families left Harasta.

Syrians flee government advances in eastern Ghouta

Syrians flee government advances in eastern GhoutaBy Tom Perry and Stephanie Nebehay BEIRUT/GENEVA (Reuters) – Thousands of civilians have fled advances by Syrian government forces in eastern Ghouta over the last two days, a war monitor and a resident said, as Damascus makes rapid gains in a fierce assault against the last major rebel enclave near the capital. Government forces need to advance just a few more kilometers (miles) further to split the enclave in two, said a commander in the military alliance that backs President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government forces had seized around a quarter of eastern Ghouta in a ground assault that got underway on Feb. 27, building on a ferocious air and artillery bombardment that has killed hundreds.

Russia orders daily truce for evacuations from Syria's eastern Ghouta

Russia orders daily truce for evacuations from Syria's eastern GhoutaBy Angus McDowall and Jack Stubbs BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia said on Monday it would establish an evacuation corridor and implement a five-hour daily truce to allow people to leave Syria’s eastern Ghouta, after a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire across the entire country. It appeared to make no mention, however, of allowing relief supplies to enter the territory, where 400,000 people are living under siege and bombardment. Over the past week, Syria’s army and its allies have subjected the rebel-held enclave near Damascus to one of the heaviest bombardments of the seven-year war, killing hundreds.

Strikes pound Syria's Eastern Ghouta as world fumbles for response

Strikes pound Syria's Eastern Ghouta as world fumbles for responseSyrian regime air strikes and artillery fire hit the rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta for a sixth straight day Friday killing 38 civilians, as world powers struggled to reach a UN deal to stop the carnage. More than 460 civilians, including over 100 children, have been killed in nearly a week of bombardment that has been one of the seven-year conflict’s bloodiest episodes. Diplomatic haggling delayed a vote at the United Nations Security Council on a 30-day truce, with Kuwait’s Ambassador Mansour al-Otaibi, who holds the council presidency, saying “we are very close” to agreement with Russia, Syria’s ally.
