Hundreds shuffle out of last IS redoubt in east Syria

Hundreds shuffle out of last IS redoubt in east SyriaHundreds of men, women and children trudged out of the Islamic State group’s last sliver of territory Thursday as US-backed Syrian fighters once again slowed their advance to crush the “caliphate”. All that remains of a once sprawling proto-state the jihadists declared in 2014 is a battered riverside camp in the village of Baghouz near the Iraqi border. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and warplanes of a US-led coalition backing them, have rained fire on the enclave since Sunday, blitzing thousands of IS members into surrender.

Historic blizzard wanes as it barrels east after pounding parts of U.SA blizzard of “historic proportions” that hit the U.S. Rocky Mountain and Plains states this week was moving eastward on Thursday as it weakened, hurling hurricane-force winds, tornadoes and heavy rain on its way, weather officials said. “While the storm has reached its lowest pressure and will gradually weaken over the next few days, strong winds will continue on the west side of the storm across portions of the Central and Northern Plains,” Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), said on Thursday in a weather advisory. A day earlier, the NWS had described the blizzard – previously dubbed a “bomb cyclone” by U.S. meteorologists for its quick, late season punch – as being of “historic proportions” in a post on Twitter.

Government shutdown delays flights on the East Coast

Government shutdown delays flights on the East CoastAnother day, another tangible impact of the government shutdown on the American people.

On Friday morning, the FAA began delaying flights into major East Coast airports — LaGuardia, Newark, Reagan (D.C.), and Philadelphia — due to air traffic control staff shortages in centers in Washington and Florida.

The disruptions come a day after several airline executives expressed concern about the shutdown's impact on their industry and as the public is starting to blame Trump more and more for the shutdown.

Of the all the Friday delays, the biggest reaction was around LaGuardia, mostly because of its reputation and location in New York City. However, JFK, Newark, and Philadelphia are all ranked as busier airports than LaGuardia.

Uh oh.

That didn't stop travelers from going into meltdown mode on Twitter, though, cracking jokes and lamenting in general.

If things are bad now, though, just wait. The chain-reaction of just these delays is sure to cause a horrendous mess heading into the weekend.  Additionally, Atlanta's airport is consistently ranked as the busiest in the world, and it's expecting an influx of travelers for next week's Super Bowl. Things may get whole lot messier.
