NRA Sues San Francisco over ‘Domestic Terrorist Organization’ Label

NRA Sues San Francisco over ‘Domestic Terrorist Organization’ LabelThe National Rifle Association filed suit Monday against the city of San Francisco in response to city's board of supervisors labeling the gun-rights group a "domestic terrorist organization."The suit — filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the city and county of San Francisco, as well as the board of supervisors — claims the city violated the gun lobby's first amendment rights by seeking to prevent any individuals or entities associated with it from doing business in San Francisco.“This lawsuit comes with a message to those who attack the NRA: we will never stop fighting for our law-abiding members and their constitutional freedoms,” NRA CEO and executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said in a statement shared with the Washington Post. The board of supervisors passed a resolution last week in response to the country's “epidemic of gun violence,” that accuses the NRA of using “its considerable wealth and organization strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence.”The resolution also declares the board's desire to “limit those entities who do business with the City and County of San Francisco from doing business with this domestic terrorist organization.”It was drafted in the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in July in which a lone gunman killed three festival-goers and injured 17 others. Three mass shootings — in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and, most recently, Odessa and Midland, Texas — have occurred since then. The San Francisco city attorney's office responded to the NRA's suit by suggesting the group focus its resources on preventing gun violence rather than retaliating against the city.“The American people would be better served if the NRA stopped trying to get weapons of war into our communities and instead actually did something about gun safety,” John Coté, a spokesman for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, told the Associated Press. “Common-sense safety measures like universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, and restricting high-capacity magazines would be a good start.”

ACLU criticizes bill criminalizing domestic terrorism

ACLU criticizes bill criminalizing domestic terrorismThe American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday urged ranking members of the House Judiciary Committee to oppose a bill that targets white supremacist groups by criminalizing domestic terrorism. The ACLU said the bill would unnecessarily expand authorities used by the Trump administration to target and discriminate against the very communities Congress hopes to protect. "People of color and other marginalized communities have long been targeted under domestic terrorism authorities for unfair and discriminatory surveillance, investigations, and prosecutions," the civil rights group said in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a Democrat, and Rep. Doug Collins, the ranking Republican member.

San Francisco Labels NRA a ‘Domestic Terrorism Organization’

San Francisco Labels NRA a ‘Domestic Terrorism Organization’The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on Tuesday declaring the National Rifle Association a “domestic terrorism organization” due to its opposition to more stringent gun-control legislation. The resolution accuses the NRA of not only resisting legislative reforms that its drafters believe would help curtail the country's "epidemic of gun violence,” but also of "incit[ing] gun owners to acts of violence.”“All countries have violent and hateful people, but only in America do we give them ready access to assault weapons and large-capacity magazines thanks, in large part, to the National Rifle Association’s influence,” the resolution says. The resolution also declares the Board's intent to "limit those entities who do business with the City and County of San Francisco from doing business with this domestic terrorist organization.” It was drafted following a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last month that resulted in the deaths of three people, according to local Fox affiliate KTVU.The NRA responded to the provocation by accusing the Board of seeking to distract from the city's shortcomings.“This ludicrous stunt by the Board of Supervisors is an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and skyrocketing petty crime, to name a few,” the statement said, according to KTVU. “The NRA will continue working to protect the constitutional rights of all freedom-loving Americans.”The partisan battle over gun control has escalated in recent weeks due to mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio and, most recently, Odessa and Midland, Texas.Congressional Democrats and their colleagues seeking the presidency continue to demand universal-background-check legislation. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, meanwhile, remains hesitant to endorse any specific legislation but said Tuesday that he would be eager to support any reforms backed by the White House.

AOC defends Ilhan Omar over 9/11 comments and points out most domestic terrorism carried out by far-right white men

AOC defends Ilhan Omar over 9/11 comments and points out most domestic terrorism carried out by far-right white menAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the popular US congresswoman, has defended her colleague Ilhan Omar, after a conservative US tabloid accused the Muslim politician of trivialising the 9/11 terror attack.Ms Omar made a speech at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) event in Los Angeles on 23 March, in which she discussed the rise of Islamophobia in the US.A brief line from her speech, “some people did something”, was used on the front page of The New York Post on 11 April. The quote had been placed over an image of the World Trade Center during the attack on 11 September 2001.The move caused immediate outrage among Democrats, who said the quote had been taken out of context and that the cover was at the centre of a bad-faith attack on Ms Omar.“I’m not going to quote the NY Post’s horrifying, hateful cover,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter.“Here’s 1 fact: [Ilhan Omar] is a cosponsor of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. She‘s done more for 9/11 families than the GOP who won’t even support healthcare for 1st responders- yet are happy to weaponize her faith.”The New York representative also criticised Dan Crenshaw, a Republican, for attacking Ms Omar and for not supporting the victim fund, which was created to help those affected by the attack. It is set to close in December 2020 if it is not reauthorised by Congress.“You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said.“In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?”A report from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), published in January 2019, found that every terrorist murder in the US in 2018 was linked to right-wing extremism.> You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes. > > In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that? t.co/rkb92IxkKX> > — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) > > April 11, 2019Ms Omar is one of the first two Muslim women to ever sit in Congress and has frequently been targeted by right-wing US politicians and public figures. At the CAIR event the Minnesota representative criticised Donald Trump’s attacks on Islam and Muslims.“Many of us knew this would get worse, we finally have a leader, a world leader, in the White House who publicly says ‘Islam hates us’, who fuels hate against Muslims, who thinks it is okay to speak about a faith and a whole community in a way that is dehumanizing, vilifying and doesn’t understand – or at least makes us want to think he doesn’t understand – the consequences his words might have,” she said.Later in her speech the congresswoman discussed the founding of CAIR, a Muslim civil rights activism group, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. At this point she used the phrase “some people did something”.> @Ilhan full comments clearly speak to post 9/11 Islamophobia Manipulating her remarks is defaming & dangerous for her & her family. Stop with this recklessness. @rupertmurdoch this is on you – stoking hate, fear & division, putting REAL lives at risk. Shame on you. t.co/fpemnGxQKk> > — Ayanna Pressley (@AyannaPressley) > > April 11, 2019“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognised that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” she said.“So you can’t just say that today someone is looking at me strange and that I am trying to make myself look pleasant.“You have to say that this person is looking at me strange, I am not comfortable with it, and I am going to talk to them and ask them why. Because that is the right you have.”According to The Los Angeles Daily News hundreds of protesters stood outside the CAIR event’s location, shouting anti-Islam slogans such as “Burn the Koran” and “Ilhan Omar go to hell”.Other Democrats, including Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley have also expressed support for Ms Omar.“The NY Post knows exactly what it’s doing – taking quotes out of context and evoking painful imagery to spread hate and endangering the life of Rep. Omar. Shame on them, and shame on Rupert Murdoch,” Ms Tlaib, said.Mr Murdoch is the owner of the US tabloid. The controversy comes just days after a man was charged for threatening to kill Ms Omar, after placing a call to her office in which he called her a “terrorist”.
