Panda diplomacy: Merkel and Xi pushed into awkward embrace before G20

Panda diplomacy: Merkel and Xi pushed into awkward embrace before G20By Noah Barkin BERLIN (Reuters) – When President Xi Jinping took the stage in Davos in January and painted China as a champion of free markets ready to fill the global leadership role vacated by the United States, German officials couldn’t help but chuckle. Six months later, as Xi arrives in Berlin for a highly symbolic visit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel before a Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, what seemed laughable in the thin mountain air of the Swiss Alps is not so absurd any more. Despite concerns about human rights in China, frustrations over market access and worries about a wave of corporate takeovers in Europe by state-run Chinese firms, Germany is being pushed into an awkward embrace with Beijing as Trump doubles down on his promise to put “America First”.

Trump shoves another foreign leader in his latest big boy diplomacy move

Trump shoves another foreign leader in his latest big boy diplomacy movePresident Trump isn't content to be leader of the free world. He wants to be head of all lines, too. In yet another humiliating moment for the country, President Trump seemingly shoved Montenegro's Prime Minister Dusko Markovic while at the NATO conference in Brussels today. After pushing Markovic, the president subtly demonstrated his dominance by pulling on his jacket like the big boy he is. Montenegro recently joined NATO, despite efforts by Russian allies in the country to block the move. A White House Advisor responded to the video by claiming that Trump's push was a "casual greeting" that he's done many times before. How comforting! WH official: Looks like Trump was slapping him on the arm as a "casual greeting," a "greeting" he's done many times before t.co/Mi0vkdg8Za — Tara Palmeri (@tarapalmeri) May 25, 2017 Trump's push followed a historically embarrassing speech at the conference where he enjoined his fellow members to contribute more of their budgets to defense. As pundits all across the political spectrum have repeatedly pointed out, that's not how NATO works, but oh well.  It's not America first, it's Trump first, everyone. Clinton knocks Trump for proposing cuts to US diplomacy

Clinton knocks Trump for proposing cuts to US diplomacy“We are seeing signals of a shift that truly alarms us all,” the former Democratic presidential candidate told hundreds of students at Georgetown University in Washington. “This administration’s proposed cuts in international health, development and diplomacy would be a blow to women and children and a grave mistake for our country,” said the Democrat, who ran the State Department from 2009 to 2013. Clinton said today’s “complex and interconnected world” requires continued American leadership on multiple fronts, not merely a focus on one or two priorities.
