Russia completes delivery of S-300 missile system to Syria

Russia completes delivery of S-300 missile system to SyriaRussia has delivered an S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Syria, it said on Tuesday, in defiance of Israeli and US concerns that the arms sale would embolden Iran and escalate the Syrian war. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin during a meeting broadcast by Rossiya 24 TV: "The work was finished a day ago," adding that the system would improve the security of Russian military personal in Syria. Russia decided to supply the system after Moscow accused Israel of indirectly causing the downing of a Russian military jet near Syria in September. Israel voiced regret at the deaths of 15 Russian air crew while saying Syrian incompetence was at fault and that it was compelled to continue taking action against suspected deployments of Iranian-backed forces across its northern border. "We have not changed our strategic line on Iran," Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet, said on Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin, right, and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu Credit: Alexei Nikolsky "We will not allow Iran to open up a third front against us. We will take actions as required," he told Israel Radio. In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert could not confirm reports that the S-300 had been delivered. "I cannot confirm that that is accurate. I hope that they did not," she told a press briefing. "That would be, I think, sort of a serious escalation in concerns and issues going on in Syria, but I just can't confirm it."

Virgin Galactic completes first powered flight since  fatal crash in 2014

Virgin Galactic completes first powered flight since  fatal crash in 2014 Virgin Galactic has completed its first powered flight since a fatal crash nearly four years, a milestone which Sir Richard Branson said brought space ‘tantalisingly close.’ The company has struggled to re-establish itself following the death of co-pilot Michael Alsbury, 39, who was killed when his aircraft crashed into the Mojave Desert in California in October 2014. Virgin Galactic had promised to send space tourists to the edge of Earth’s atmosphere where they could see the curvature of the planet and experience weightlessness. But after Captain Alsbury’s death, some customers who had already bought tickets demanded refunds, and the company spent years redesigning the craft, carrying out extensive engine testing and glide tests before attempting another supersonic flight. Virgin Galactic's Unity aircraft completed its first powered flight in the Mojave desert Credit: Virgin Galactic  On Thursday the Unity spacecraft took up with a two member crew from the Mojave Air and Space port, lifted by the jet-powered mothership Eve. It then powered up for 30 seconds and landed safely. It puts Britain firmly back in the commercial tourism and launch provider space race, which until recently the US appeared to be winning. Branson said Virgin Galactic was ‘back on track’ and confirmed that the flight had reached Mach 1.6, more than 1.5 times the speed of sound. Announcing the success on Twitter, he added: “Data review to come, then on to the next flight. Space feels tantalisingly close now.” The entire project has been dogged with problems. Two of the six flights made by SpaceShipOne suffered potentially catastrophic problems. And in 2007, an explosion killed three engineers. It is the first time Virgin Galactic has completed a power flight since the death of Captain Michael Alsbury in October 2014 Credit: Virgin Galactic Before the accident, Virgin Galactic said the first space tourism flights would begin in the Spring of 2015. Even in the November following the crash CEO George Whitesides said it would be ‘months not years’ until commercial flights began, but an investigation found there had been inadequate safety features and the team was forced to go back to the drawing board, unveiling a new design in 2016. Around 24 passengers pulled out and have had the $ 250,000 (£157,000) ticket price refunded. Although some may only have paid deposits, the company stands to lose more than £3 million in lost sales. High profile ticket-holders include Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet and, until his death Stephen Hawking. In October, Virgin Galactic was given a huge $ 1 billion boost from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. At the time, Branson said the company was just months away from sending a ship into Earth’s atmosphere. Following the flight Virgin Galactic tweeted: “Touch down. Congratulations Mark “Forger” Stucky and Dave Mackay for a great milestone test flight”

High-speed Hyperloop completes first test run

High-speed Hyperloop completes first test runThe high-speed Hyperloop has completed its first successful test, laying the foundations for a transport system that could cut the 424-mile journey from London to Edinburgh to 50 minutes.  Hyperloop One has revealed it completed a test with its first prototype of the radical system, which could eventually feature pods propelled through a vacuum at speeds of up to 760 miles per hour, back in May. Introducing the world’s only vehicle that achieves autonomous high-speed propulsion and levitation in a vacuum environment: our pod! pic.twitter.com/f65gD1asu5— HyperloopOne (@HyperloopOne) July 12, 2017 Credit: Hyperloop One The first version of the pod reached 70 miles per hour in the 5.3 second test in the Nevada desert. Hyperloop One said it used just 100 feet of the motor and that this will improve as "the longer the motor the faster we can go".  It says it hopes to achieve speeds of 250 miles per hour in the next test.  Alongside news of the trial it shared images of how the first Hyperloop One pods could look. Hyperloop CEO: We Want to Go Public in Third Quarter 03:46 It will be some time before the Hyperloop becomes a reality given the complexity of the new technology, but the test marks an important step, according to the company.  "For the first time in over 100 years, a new mode of transportation has been introduced. Hyperloop is real, and it's here now," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One. "By achieving full vacuum, we essentially invented our own sky in a tube, as if you're flying at 200,000 feet in the air."  The company is one of a number of private firms and research groups developing versions of the system, which is the brainchild of Elon Musk. US billionaire Musk launched a competition for organisations to develop a feasible version of the idea back in 2015.  A proposed route for the Hyperloop Credit: Hyperloop One California-based Hyperloop One is the first team to unveil a working prototype for the mode of transport and to test it. Its pods are designed to travel in a vacuum using magnetic levitation to reach the superfast speeds. It will further test its preliminary technology in the coming months.  The company unveiled its 500m-long test track earlier this year, as well as announcing a number of potential Hyperloop routes in Europe. The nine proposed routes include three in the UK: London to Edinburgh, Cardiff to Glasgow, and Liverpool to Glasgow.  Crazy futuristic transport
