Second Trump whistleblower comes forward with first-hand information: lawyer

Second Trump whistleblower comes forward with first-hand information: lawyerA second whistleblower has come forward, this one with first-hand information about events that triggered an impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump for alleged abuse of power, the informant’s lawyer said Sunday. “I can confirm this report of a second #whistleblower being represented by our legal team,” Mark Zaid said on Twitter. Zaid’s co-counsel, Andrew Bakaj, said earlier that his firm and team “represent multiple whistleblowers” in the case accusing Trump of using the powers of his office to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Second whistleblower in Trump-Ukraine scandal comes forward: lawyer

Second whistleblower in Trump-Ukraine scandal comes forward: lawyerA second whistleblower has come forward with first-hand knowledge of President Donald Trump’s attempts to get the Ukrainian president to investigate a political rival, lawyers for the official said on Sunday. Lawyer Mark Zaid said the person, also an intelligence official, has direct knowledge of some of the allegations involving the initial whistleblower complaint, which triggered impeachment proceedings against the Republican president. The emergence of a second protected witness complicates efforts by Trump and his Republican supporters to dismiss the complaint as politically motivated hearsay and may strengthen the Democrats’ case against him.

Second whistleblower comes forward in Trump impeachment inquiry as Republican unease grows

Second whistleblower comes forward in Trump impeachment inquiry as Republican unease growsUS President Donald Trump was under renewed pressure over his dealings with Ukraine on Sunday after it emerged that another whistleblower had come forward, this time with firsthand knowledge of the allegations. News of the second whistleblower broke amid signs of increasing anxiety among Republican senators, as the Democrats in the House of Representatives pressed ahead with impeachment proceedings. The existence of the second whistleblower was announced by the legal team representing the original complainant who accused Mr Trump of pressuring Ukraine's president to investigate his Democratic rival Joe Biden. “I can confirm that my firm and my team represent multiple whistleblowers in connection to the underlying August 12, 2019, disclosure to the Intelligence Community Inspector General,” Andrew Bakaj, managing partner of Compass Rose Legal Group, wrote on Twitter. Mark Zaid, another member of the original whistleblower’s legal team, said the second individual had spoken to the inspector general of the intelligence community but had not filed a formal complaint.  The second whistleblower has spoken to the US inspector general, the lawyer for the first whistleblower said Credit:  Nikki Kahn/The Washington Post via Getty Images It is the latest chapter in a scandal which erupted last month when a CIA whistleblower came forward raising concern about a call between Mr Trump and the newly elected Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy. In that call, a record of which has been released by the White House, the US president asked Mr Zelenskiy to investigate Mr Biden, a favourite for the Democratic presidential nomination, and his son Hunter, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.  Mr Trump has claimed that Hunter Biden profited in his business dealings in both Ukraine and China from his father's position, although there has been no evidence of any wrongdoing. It has been alleged that Mr Trump leveraged $ 400 million in military aid in an attempt to secure Mr Zelenskiy's cooperation.  Mr Trump’s supporters had sought to undermine the original whistleblower by dismissing his complaints as hearsay. Last week the New York Times reported an intelligence official with more direct knowledge of the president’s dealings with Ukraine was poised to come forward. However it is unclear whether the new whistleblower is the same person. Mr Trump has been dismissive of the allegations, venting his anger on Twitter. ….And by the way, I would LOVE running against 1% Joe Biden – I just don’t think it’s going to happen. Sleepy Joe won’t get to the starting gate, & based on all of the money he & his family probably “extorted,” Joe should hang it up. I wouldn’t want him dealing with China & U!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 6, 2019 “The first so-called second hand information ‘Whistleblower’ got my phone conversation almost completely wrong, so now word is they are going to the bench and another ‘Whistleblower’ is coming in from the Deep State, also with second hand info,” he wrote on Saturday night. "Keep them coming!" Mr Trump has maintained the latest series of allegations swirling around Washington are little more than a political stunt by Democrats, notably Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who has played a central role in the impeachment push.  With the Republicans controlling the Senate, the US president currently appears safe from being forced out of office, given that a two-thirds super-majority is needed for impeachment. But several leading Republicans have been critical of Mr Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, in particular Mitt Romney, who was the party’s presidential candidate in 2012. He described Mr Trump’s attempt to enlist Ukraine – and China – in a campaign to discredit Mr Biden as “brazen and unprecedented”. How a UK investigation helped spark the impeachment of Donald Trump Mr Romney tweeted: “When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for China’s investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated.” The Utah senator’s intervention served only to reignite the long-running feud between the two men, with Mr Trump saying on Twitter that the Democrats were lucky they did not have “any Mitt Romney types.” On Saturday, Susan Collins, Maine’s Republican senator, said Mr Trump had made a “big mistake” in asking China to get involved in investigating Mr Biden. Nebraska's Republican senator, Ben Sasse, also broke ranks after Mr Trump suggested that the Chinese should investigate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter.  “Hold up: Americans don’t look to Chinese commies for the truth. If the Biden kid broke laws by selling his name to Beijing, that’s a matter for American courts, not communist tyrants running torture camps,” he said. Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman who is challenging Mr Trump for the party’s nomination, added his voice to those calling for the president to be impeached. "There's enough we know now to vote to impeach this President. He stood on the White House lawn this week and told two additional foreign governments to interfere in our election,” he said on CNN. “That alone is impeachable.” Mr Biden, meanwhile, launched his own attack on Mr Trump in an op-ed in the Washington Post. “Every day — every few hours, seemingly — more evidence is uncovered revealing that President Trump is abusing the power of the presidency and is wholly unfit to be president.”

Democratic debate: 2020 race heats up as frontrunner Joe Biden comes under fire

Democratic debate: 2020 race heats up as frontrunner Joe Biden comes under fireDemocrats have finished up their second round of debates, with the second night of the second round featuring a majority of the candidates on stage piling on with attacks on Joe Biden.Bill de Blasio attacked him for deportations during the Obama years, while Kirsten Gillibrand took him to task over womens' rights. Meanwhile, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris both attacked his record on criminal justice. The attacks show that the race to become the Democratic Party's standard bearer is heating up, and Mr Biden has found himself increasingly in a place where he must defending decades of living in the political spotlight. But, while the second night amounted to a frenzy of attacks on Mr Biden, other candidates were not left unscathed.Ms Harris, who had a breakout moment in the first debate when she challenged Mr Biden over his past position anti-segegation busing, was attacked by Tulsi Gabbard for her record as a prosecutor in California. Ms Gabbard, whose campaign focuses primarily on keeping the US out of "regime change" wars, said that Ms Harris put people behind bars for smoking marijuana, then "laughed" when asked if she had ever used the drug herself. Mr Booker was attacked for "stop and frisk" policing methods in Newark when he was mayor there. Mr de Blasio was attacked repeatedly for the continued presence of the New York Police Department officer who killed Eric Garner on the city's payroll.Throughout it all was the underlying schism in the Democratic Party, a divide that is perhaps best illustrated in the various proposals for revamping America's healthcare system. But, while candidates like Ms Harris stood by their so-called Medicare for All proposals, the candidates better known for their progressive politics — Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders — were both present for the first night of debates. During that debate, Ms Warren and Mr Sanders fielded their own set of concentrated attacks, and emerged fairly unscathed in the end.The next round of debates will be held in September, when the large field of candidates will likely have slimmed down. Mr Biden may have a chance to spar with the other two front-runners soon.Follow live updates Please allow a moment for our liveblog to load
