Black hole eats and destroys hapless star which wandered too close

Black hole eats and destroys hapless star which wandered too closeBeware of the hungry black hole. Astronomers tracked a supermassive black hole, 20 million times larger than the sun, which ate up and destroyed a star that came too close. SEE ALSO: Three baby planets hanging around a star discovered by astronomers Located nearly 150 million light years away from Earth, scientists theorise the star swirled around the black hole, emitting intense x-rays and visible light, as a jet of material spat out at a quarter of the speed of light. Such an occurrence, called a tidal disruption event (TDE), has been rarely spotted. But scientists think they happen more often. In the case of this stellar death, astronomers used radio and infrared telescopes, such as New Mexico's Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), to keep an eye on the event which happened in a pair of colliding galaxies called Arp 299. "Never before have we been able to directly observe the formation and evolution of a jet from one of these events," Miguel Perez-Torres, from the Astrophysical Institute of Andalusia and who published a report in the journal
Science, said in a statement online. Astronomers noticed a bright burst near Arp 299, and kept track of the occurrence over a decade, which revealed a jet of electromagnetic waves going in one direction from the black hole. A black hole is an area of space which has such strong gravitational pull that nothing can escape from it, including light. Although most galaxies have black holes, they're not necessarily out there actively eating everything up. Mattila said the discovery might just be the "tip of the iceberg" for TDEs, with the potential for more discoveries ahead. "By looking for these events with infrared and radio telescopes, we may be able to discover many more, and learn from them," he added. WATCH: These trees have lived for 2,500 years. US isolated as G7 ministerial draws to a close

US isolated as G7 ministerial draws to a closeThe United States faced unified opposition from the world’s top economies to President Donald Trump’s escalating, multi-front trade offensive at the end of high-level meetings Saturday soured by the imposition of tariffs. G7 ministers urged US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who was at the event, to express their “unanimous concern and disappointments” to the White House over new US tariffs, Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau told reporters. Morneau, speaking at the end of the Group of Seven ministerial meeting, said that the finance ministers and central bank governors were unanimously opposed at the harsh US steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Starbucks to close 8,000 branches for afternoon of racial bias training after discrimination row

Starbucks to close 8,000 branches for afternoon of racial bias training after discrimination row  Starbucks will close more than 8,000 US stores for an afternoon of racial bias training after the arrest of two black men in a Philadelphia branch triggered claims of discrimination.  Almost 175,000 workers will go through training on May 29, the company announced on Tuesday after footage of the arrest made headlines.  Kevin Johnson, the Starbucks CEO, said the move was just “one step” in the company’s “journey” to improve and understand “what we did wrong”.  Footage of the arrest taken by other customers had gone viral in recent days and prompted a slew of negative headlines for the company.  The two black men had been waiting for a friend when they were asked to leave by staff. There are reports one or both of the men asked to use the restroom without buying anything.  An employee called the police before the men's friend arrived and argued with officers  as they applied handcuffs, saying: “You can’t discriminate.” Other customers are heard criticising the police.  The pair were arrested and held for eight hours before being released with no charge, according to their attorney.  The incident triggered protests, with critics holding posters saying “shame on you Starbucks” and “too little too latté”.  Protestors demonstrate inside a Center City Starbucks, where two black men were arrested, in Philadelphia Credit: REUTERS/Mark Makela Mr Johnson gave interviews saying he wanted to “personally apologise” over the arrests and also met the two men to say sorry face-to-face.  He told ABC News: "The circumstances surrounding the incident and the outcome in our store on Thursday were reprehensible… they were wrong." On Tuesday, Mr Johnson said in a statement: “I’ve spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it.  Starbucks's US stores will close on May 29 Credit: AP Photo/Lisa Poole “While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.” The training on May 29 will “address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome”.  Starbucks has more than 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States which are all closing.
