The F-35 Trap: How the Air Force Can Avoid Trouble Before Building a New Fighter Jet

The F-35 Trap: How the Air Force Can Avoid Trouble Before Building a New Fighter JetThe idea of avoiding a project the magnitude of the F-35 makes a ton of sense. Even if the F-35 eventually proves successful, it nearly became a victim of its enormity, attracting harsh criticism because of its size and expense.Could a rethink of U.S. acquisition policies bring back the heady days of the “Century Series,” a time in which the Air Force could pick and choose between a variety of different fighters specialized in certain tasks? Could such an approach free the Pentagon from the specter of another gigantic, F-35-sized procurement project? An increasing number of people seem to think so, but before we take steps down that road we should make note of the pitfalls.(This first appeared last month.)As reported by Stephen Trimble in Aviation Week, Will Roper, the assistant Air Force secretary for acquisition, technology and logistics, has argued that the United States needs to stop and rethink its acquisition policies before embarking on the Next Generation Fighter project.

Schumer to Reintroduce Bill Naming Senate Building after McCain

Schumer to Reintroduce Bill Naming Senate Building after McCainSenator Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that he plans to reintroduce a bill that would rename the Russell Senate Office Building after the late senator John McCain, amid a rekindled public feud between President Trump and the McCain family."I look forward to soon re-introducing my legislation re-naming the Russell Senate Building after American hero, Senator John McCain," the Senate minority leader wrote in a tweet Wednesday.Schumer's announcement came after Trump said Tuesday at the White House that, "I was never a fan of John McCain, and I never will be."McCain passed away from brain cancer at 81 years of age last August. The Arizona Republican's daughter, Meghan McCain, has vehemently defended her father from Trump's attacks, saying Monday that the president's focus on her father is a sign of his "pathetic life."Trump's beef with McCain, who lost the presidential election to Barack Obama in 2008, stretches back to the 2016 campaign season, when he criticized McCain for being captured and suffering for more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said at the time of McCain. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”Trump's frustration with McCain was aggravated by the senator's dramatic eleventh-hour vote against repealing the Affordable Care Act in July 2017. The senator "told us hours before that he was going to repeal and replace," Trump said Tuesday. "And then for some reason — I think I understand the reason — he ended up" voting against.“We’ll be talking about the best way to honor Sen. McCain,” Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said of Schumer's proposal.

White House chief: Trump not building a 'wall'

White House chief: Trump not building a 'wall'Outgoing White House chief John Kelly said in an interview published Sunday that he had “nothing but compassion” for undocumented migrants crossing into the US, and undercut President Donald Trump’s claims to be building a “wall” at the Mexico border. Building a solid “wall” along the 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) US-Mexico frontier was a central plank of Trump’s 2016 election campaign, and he has tweeted about it almost 100 times this year alone. “Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border,” Trump — who has adopted the 2020 re-election mantra “promises made, promises kept” — posted as recently as Friday.
