At least nine migrants dead after boat capsizes off Italian island of Lampedusa

At least nine migrants dead after boat capsizes off Italian island of LampedusaAt least nine people died when a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank off the coast of the island of Lampedusa, south of Sicily, Italy's coastguard said on Monday. The coastguard said rescue vessels had picked up 22 people, and search operations for other survivors were underway after an alert was received late on Sunday night that a boat carrying some 50 people was in difficulty. The UN migration agency said the boat had set sail from Tunisia and had been carrying Tunisian and west African migrants. Vessels from the coastguard and customs police had reached the vessel, which overturned in rough seas about six nautical miles from the coast of Lampedusa, the coastguard said in a statement. Nine bodies had been recovered, it added. "This highlights once again that urgent action is needed to address the situation in the Mediterranean," said Charlie Yaxley, a spokesperson for the United Nations' refugee agency, the UNHCR. "More than 1,000 people have died on the Mediterranean this year alone, most on the route from Libya to Europe," he said. The Italian interior ministry says some 7,939 migrants have reached Italy by boat so far this year, down 63% on the same period in 2018 and 93% on 2017 levels.

Spanish police arrest drug traffickers who saved their lives in high speed boat chase

Spanish police arrest drug traffickers who saved their lives in high speed boat chaseSpanish police arrested four drug traffickers who stopped to save their lives after the officers were thrown overboard during a high speed boat chase off the coast of Malaga on Friday.  The three police officers fell into the sea following a collision with the trafficking boat during the chase, a Guardia Civil statement said.  A police helicopter hovering overhead appealed to the speedboat via megaphone to stop and help the officers after their boat "span out of control", and the traffickers did so, pulling the agents to safety unharmed. However, when police found three tonnes of hashish in the waters nearby, the rescue did not appear to work in the traffickers' favour. The four on board were arrested regardless.  "They were arrested for drug trafficking," a police statement said, indicating that more than 80 bundles of hash had been recovered from the sea.   In a video posted by the Guardia Civil, the boats can be seen zooming across the open ocean before the semi-inflatable trafficking boat turns into the path of the police vessel, forcing it to turn sharply, throwing the three officers overboard.  The video taken from the police helicopter then shows the officers bobbing around in the water below, before a wide shot shows the drug bundles floating nearby.  High speed chases are not unusual off the coast of Malaga and the Costa del Sol, a known drug smuggling route from Africa to Europe.  Morocco, just across the water, is the world's largest exporter of cannabis resin or hashish, according to the United Nations.  A dramatic chase at the end of last year saw police ram a suspected drug boat in the open water, before officers from the chasing helicopter managed to intercept the fleeing suspects on land.    The Spanish government has even moved to ban the high-speed semi-inflatable boats, known as RIBs, that are commonly used by traffickers to bring both drugs and more recently migrants from North Africa to Spain.

Indian authorities step up rescue effort for 20 tourists missing after boat capsize

Indian authorities step up rescue effort for 20 tourists missing after boat capsizeThe Indian authorities have intensified their rescue efforts today with more than 20 people still missing after a boat illegally carrying Indian tourists capsized on Sunday. The bodies of 12 people have so far been recovered from the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh after the ‘Royal Vasishta’ vessel collided with a rock formation while traveling to the popular tourist destination of Papikondalu. The local government said they had banned tourist boats from operating on the river after heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise dangerously. ‘Stern action’ would be taken against those responsible for organising the tour, according to the Home Minister for Andhra Pradesh.  Local media said while life jackets were available on the boat most passengers were not wearing them because it was unusually hot. They also reported that the crew seemed untrained to deal with the emergency. The ‘Royal Vasishta’ was carrying 61 people, including crew, when it sunk. Everyone on board was an Indian national and the majority were believed to be tourists from the neighbouring Telengana state. Two helicopters, eight boats and a team of divers have been deployed to search for those missing and feared drowned. They are yet to locate the vessel which is believed to have sunk to a depth of over 300ft.  The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh accompanied one of the helicopters to conduct an aerial survey of the accident spot while Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences.  India has an extremely poor safety record when it comes to boat travel. Operators rarely adhere to laws which govern the number of passengers who can safely travel at one time and do not carry out checks. In May 2018, 30 people died after a similar boat capsized close to the location of Sunday’s accident.
