Escape bids by rebel princesses throw spotlight on UAE rights

Escape bids by rebel princesses throw spotlight on UAE rightsPrincess Haya, who is battling her husband Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum in a UK court, is the third princess who has sought to escape the Gulf emirate in recent years. Activists say the attempts by Haya and two of Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters to escape the United Arab Emirates (UAE) throw a harsh spotlight on the country’s rights record, even as it tries to present a glitzy and modern image to the West. In 2000, Sheikha Shamsa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum tried to escape the family’s entourage during a holiday in England, but was reportedly picked up two months later and forcibly returned to Dubai.

S.Africa bids emotional farewell to 'Mama Winnie' Mandela

S.Africa bids emotional farewell to 'Mama Winnie' MandelaThousands of mourners flocked Wednesday to the heart of South Africa’s sprawling Soweto township, a centre of anti-apartheid resistance, to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s former wife and struggle hero Winnie Mandela. The choice of Soweto’s 37,000-capacity Orlando stadium for both the memorial service and the full state funeral planned for Saturday was highly symbolic. Unlike many struggle-era leaders who moved from townships like Soweto to formerly white suburbs after apartheid fell, Winnie Mandela remained embedded in the community where she met Nelson Mandela at a bus stop in 1957.

Publishers prepare big money bids for James Comey's book on the FBI and Donald Trump

Publishers prepare big money bids for James Comey's book on the FBI and Donald TrumpJames Comey, the FBI director fired by Donald Trump as he investigated Trump campaign ties to Russia, is writing a book about his career and its tumultuous conclusion. The assiduous note taker has already proved himself an annoyance to the White House, leaking a memo to the press about how the president asked him to drop one aspect of his probe, fuelling allegations of obstruction of justice. As a result his agents have stoked intense interest in his book proposal which is expected to be the subject of a big money auction in the New York this week.  Comey recorded meeting because he thought Trump "might lie" 01:03 Literary circles are abuzz with speculation Mr Comey could command an eight-figure advance for his memoirs. His testimony before a Senate committee last month attracted an audience of 20 million people, who wanted to hear how the president demanded a personal oath of loyalty. Mr Comey also said he believed he was fired because he refused to end an investigation into Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign as National Security Adviser after it emerged he misled officials about earlier meetings with Russian officials. Publishers will hope Mr Comey has more headline-grabbing secrets to spill although the text will have to be vetted by the Department of Justice to prevent the release of classified material. His agents claimed he was initially reluctant to entertain offers despite the intense interest. Rather than rehashing his career, he wanted to draw on his experiences to find broader lessons on ethics and leadership, according to Matt Latimer of the Javelin agency. “It’s a book about leadership and his search for truth, informed by lessons and experiences he’s had throughout his career, including his recent experiences in the Trump administration,” he told The New York Times. “It will speak to a broader desire in our country for more ethical leadership.”
