Historic blizzard wanes as it barrels east after pounding parts of U.S

Historic blizzard wanes as it barrels east after pounding parts of U.SA blizzard of “historic proportions” that hit the U.S. Rocky Mountain and Plains states this week was moving eastward on Thursday as it weakened, hurling hurricane-force winds, tornadoes and heavy rain on its way, weather officials said. “While the storm has reached its lowest pressure and will gradually weaken over the next few days, strong winds will continue on the west side of the storm across portions of the Central and Northern Plains,” Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS), said on Thursday in a weather advisory. A day earlier, the NWS had described the blizzard – previously dubbed a “bomb cyclone” by U.S. meteorologists for its quick, late season punch – as being of “historic proportions” in a post on Twitter.

This massive pile of barrels will break your bourbon-loving heart

This massive pile of barrels will break your bourbon-loving heartTo the bourbon fans out there: I'm sorry for what you're about to witness.  I know it will pain you to see thousands of barrels piled up in a mess of broken wood and metal scraps rather than stacked neatly along the walls of your favorite distillery, but that's the unfortunate reality down in Bardstown, Ky. right now. Courier-Journal reports, part of a warehouse at Barton 1792 Distillery collapsed on Friday, sending an estimated 9,000 barrels tumbling to the ground. No one was hurt.  In a statement provided to the newspaper, the company said it's in the process of assessing the damage and determining which barrels can be saved. As the
New York Times reports, though initial testing "came back clean," state officials from the Division of Waste Management and from the Division of Water plan to continue testing.  Despite the collapse, the
Courier-Journal reports that the distillery plans to stay open on Saturday for tours, as usual. The paper reports that the warehouse is just one of 29 warehouses on the distillery's property. While we're thrilled no one was hurt in the collapse, we'll be busy mourning the loss of what could be a serious amount of nice liquor. I mean, just look at the aerial footage, courtesy of CBS DFW: Pour one out for the barrels we've lost. WATCH: This gadget lets you pour wine without uncorking the bottle

'Three dead, dozens injured' as Typhoon Hato barrels through Hong Kong, Macao and China

'Three dead, dozens injured' as Typhoon Hato barrels through Hong Kong, Macao and ChinaDozens of people were injured and at least three dead after a powerful typhoon barrelled into Hong Kong and the nearby city of Macao before hitting China on Wednesday, reports said. Thousands were evacuated from their homes in southern China as Typhoon Hato – the worst storm in the region for five years – slammed into the mainland after flooding streets and uprooting trees in Hong Kong. The maximum category 10 storm had forced Hong Kong’s stock market to close and caused at least 400 flights at the city’s airport to be cancelled. Packing winds of up to 155 kmh (95 mph), the typhoon shattered windows on the city’s skyscrapers, flooded low-lying areas and blew over public bins across the financial hub. The No. 10 signal has only been hoisted 14 other times since 1946, or one for every 72 storms, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. The last time it went up was for Typhoon Vicente in 2012. Hato also brought large-scale power cuts to the gambling hub of Macao, where hotels were turning away customers because of power issues, the SCMP said. The centre of the storm skirted around Hong Kong, but was close enough to be considered a direct hit under the city’s storm warning system. However, it made landfall at midday (05.00am GMT) at Zhuhai, in China’s Guangdong province, Xinhua said.
