China's Xi arrives in Athens to 'deepen cooperation'
Chinese President Xi Jinping touched down in Athens on Sunday, for a three-day visit looking at “a deeper cooperation with Greece in all sectors”. Xi is expected to meet President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the two countries are due to sign cooperation documents on education, shipping and energy. “It is our duty to steadily upgrade our cooperation in all sectors, by delving deeply into existing fields and expanding the range of investments”, the Chinese president said in an article published in “Kathimerini” newspaper on Sunday.
Panic as strong quake shakes Athens
A strong 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Athens on Friday, knocking out phone connections, damaging buildings and causing power outages, as panicked residents rushed into the streets. State TV ERT reported that at least two people were lightly hurt — a pregnant tourist and a young boy — and at least two abandoned buildings in the capital collapsed, while several more suffered damage. The epicentre of the shallow quake was northwest of Athens, close to where a 5.9-magnitude quake in September 1999 left 143 people dead in and around the capital.
Thousands protest in Athens against Macedonian accord
Scuffles broke out in central Athens Sunday as tens of thousands of people protested a planned name change for neighbouring Macedonia that parliament is due to ratify this week. After some 30 masked youths tried to force the closure of the parliament building by throwing stones, riot police responded with tear gas volleys to break up the crowd there. Hundreds of buses, especially from northern Greece, had brought protesters in for the rally, on Syntagma square near the parliament.
Greek anarchist group smashes windows at Novartis office in Athens
Greek self-proclaimed anarchists threw paint and smashed windows at the entrance of the Athens headquarters of Swiss drugmaker Novartis on Sunday, police said. About 30 people were involved in the attack at 0515 local time (0315 GMT), a police official said. In a statement published on the Internet, the Rouvikonas group said the attack was linked to a probe into allegations of bribery by the drugmaker to doctors and public officials.
Wildfire near Athens damages homes and forces residents to flee
A wildfire close to a village near Athens has damaged dozens of houses and caused people to flee their homes, officials said on Monday. More than 150 firefighters with 50 fire engines and three water-dropping helicopters battled the blaze, which broke out in Kalamos, a coastal area some 45 km (30 miles) northeast of Athens. A fire brigade official told Reuters that no injuries had been reported but at least a dozen houses were heavily damaged.
