UN urges Europe to allow 500 migrants stranded on rescue boats to be allowed to come ashore

UN urges Europe to allow 500 migrants stranded on rescue boats to be allowed to come ashoreThe UN’s refugee agency made an urgent appeal for 500 asylum seekers stuck on boats in the Mediterranean to be allowed to disembark, calling it a “race against time” as bad weather approaches. The 507 migrants and refugees are stranded on two NGO rescue vessels, which picked them up off the coast of Libya in recent days. “It is a race against time,” said Vincent Cochetel, the UNHCR’s special envoy for the central Mediterranean. “Storms are expected and conditions will only get worse. To leave people who have fled war and violence in Libya on the high seas in this weather will only inflict more suffering.” NGO rescue vessels should be applauded for their work, not “stigmatised and criminalised,” the UNHCR said, adding that many of the migrants have suffered “terrible abuses” in Libya. But the agency got short shrift from Italy, where ports have been closed to rescue vessels since last summer, in a policy forged by Matteo Salvini, interior minister and leader of the hard-Right League party. In a Facebook post, he said he was working to block the boats. "I will let you know how this ends. I will not give up," he wrote. The other 150 are on board the Open Arms, a Spanish rescue ship.  The UN called for them all to be allowed to disembark in a safe port. Mr Salvini and the populist government have repeatedly suggested that  Tunisian ports should be considered safe, questioning why migrants should be brought to Italy, Malta or other European countries. So far this year, around 600 migrants have died trying to reach Europe from North Africa by sea. Mr Salvini has drastically reduced the number of migrants reaching Italy by sea – just 4,265 have arrived so far this year, down nearly 80 per cent on the same period last year. His mantra that “the good times are over” for illegal migration has gone down well with millions of Italians, with the League polling around 38 per cent as Italy looks set to face new elections after Mr Salvini pulled the plug on the 14-month coalition with the Five Star Movement.

Trump admits he allowed Devin Nunes access to classified intelligence documents about Russia investigation

Trump admits he allowed Devin Nunes access to classified intelligence documents about Russia investigationDonald Trump has given the US attorney general permission to share classified information about the Russia investigation with Devin Nunes, the Republican House Intelligence Committee ranking member who has called for Justice Department and FBI officials to be jailed over the probe. The US president said he had given William Barr “a total release” of documents relating to the investigation into Moscow’s interference in the 2016 election, and had also “given him authorisation to release it to whoever he wants”.“He’s got everything; everything he needs, he’s got,” he told Sean Hannity in an interview on Fox News on Thursday night.Mr Trump added: “He’s the attorney general of the United States, he’s has got a lot of very good people under him that I guess are involved and I gave them a total release. So, all of it’s been released and he has all of it.“I’ve also given him authorisation to release it to whoever he wants, whether it’s his people or frankly perhaps people like Devin Nunes, who is a star.”Mr Nunes, the former chair of the House Intelligence Committee, this week portrayed allegations that Mr Trump’s presidential campaign team colluded with Russia as a “hoax” comparable to “the Loch Ness monster”.Earlier this month, he described officials who triggered Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation as “a bunch of dirty cops”.“Some of them better go to jail, or we're going to go down in a spiral in this country because you will not have a Republican that will trust the FBI or the Department of Justice for generations to come,” he told Fox News presenter Bill Hemmer.Mr Mueller, giving testimony on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, rejected Mr Trump's claims to have been been exonerated by the special counsel's report."That is not what the report said. The president was not exculpated for the acts that he allegedly committed," he told congress.Mr Nunes has repeatedly been accused of attempting to undermine investigations into the Russia allegations. In 2017, he was forced to temporarily recuse himself from the House Intelligence Committee’s probe while the Office of Congressional Ethics investigated his disclosure of intelligence files which he claimed showed Mr Trump’s transition team had been caught up in surveillance. He reportedly received the files from White House officials and was criticised by both Democrats and Republicans for revealing information from classified documents.Mr Nunes was later cleared by the ethics watchdog, but the release of the declassified memo last year showed key elements of his claims of FBI misconduct had been false or misleading.

Trump says Mueller should not be allowed to testify about investigating possible obstruction of justice

Trump says Mueller should not be allowed to testify about investigating possible obstruction of justiceDonald Trump has said Robert Mueller should not be allowed to testify to congress about his investigation into the president’s possible obstruction of justice and links to Russia.“Highly conflicted Robert Mueller should not be given another bite at the apple,” the president tweeted, after Mr Mueller appeared in front of the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees on Wednesday.“In the end it will be bad for him and the phony Democrats in Congress who have done nothing but waste time on this ridiculous Witch Hunt. Result of the Mueller Report, NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION!”The president has repeatedly hit out at Mr Mueller as “conflicted” – without evidence – as well as calling the investigation into Russia election interference a “witch hunt”. The aim for Mr Trump has always been to undermine Mr Mueller’s credibility throughout the two-year probe.Mr Mueller’s report did not find sufficient evidence to establish charges of criminal conspiracy but did find evidence Mr Trump had potentially obstructed the investigation.Presenting his report in May, the then-special counsel indicated he was prevented from indicting a sitting president – saying such an action was “not an option” – because of the legal opinion of the Justice Department. He did not use the word “impeachment” but said it was the job of congress to hold the president accountable for wrongdoing.> Highly conflicted Robert Mueller should not be given another bite at the apple. In the end it will be bad for him and the phony Democrats in Congress who have done nothing but waste time on this ridiculous Witch Hunt. Result of the Mueller Report, NO COLLUSION, NO OBSTRUCTION!…> > — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) > > July 22, 2019“But the questions should be asked,” the president said in a second tweet on Monday. “Why were all of Clinton’s people given immunity, and why were the text messages of Peter S and his lover, Lisa Page, deleted and destroyed right after they left Mueller, and after we requested them(this is Illegal)?”Mr Trump was referring to Peter Strzok, who led the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email server. He also worked on Mr Mueller's probe into the president's possible campaign links to Russia. Mr Mueller is expected to testify before congress in back-to-back hearings on Wednesday in a move that could potentially lead the Democrat-led House of Representatives to begin formal impeachment inquiry proceedings. In a statement preparing for the upcoming testimony, house judiciary committee chair Jerrold Nadler said the testimony would provide “very substantial evidence” against Mr Trump.“This is a president who has violated the law six ways from Sunday,” said Mr Nadler, a New York Democrat, on Sunday. He added: “We have to present – or let Mueller present – those facts to the American people … because the administration must be held accountable and no president can be above the law.”Mr Mueller has said he does not intend to reveal anything more than what he laid out in his nearly 400-page report. But many Democrats in congress will hope the public testimony could push forward the case for impeachment when he is asked about the 10 examples of the president's alleged obstruction of justice. Republicans are likely to follow a similar line of questioning line to Mr Trump, and ask Mr Mueller about his team.

Court: GOP mapmaker's files allowed in gerrymandering trial

Court: GOP mapmaker's files allowed in gerrymandering trialA few dozen computer files recovered from the home of a deceased Republican redistricting consultant can be offered as evidence in next week’s partisan gerrymandering trial in North Carolina, state judges ruled on Friday. The three-judge panel presiding over the trial that starts Monday sided with the election reform group Common Cause, the North Carolina Democratic Party and registered Democratic voters who are suing Republican lawmakers and challenging state House and Senate boundaries drawn in 2017. The plaintiffs subpoenaed documents from the estranged daughter of longtime GOP mapmaker Tom Hofeller that turned out to be more than 75,000 files from 22 hard drives and thumb drives that she said she came across while looking for personal mementos.
