Footage shows African migrants being sold as slaves at auction for as little as £300 each

Footage shows African migrants being sold as slaves at auction for as little as £300 eachThe Libyan government is to investigate allegations that African migrants are being sold as slaves at auctions. Tens of thousands of migrants, many of them from West Africa but also Bangladesh, Somalia, Sudan and Eritrea, are being held in camps and warehouses on the Libyan coast, hoping to reach Europe. When the warehouses become overcrowded, or if migrants are unable to pay traffickers for the boat journey towards Italy – where many are rescued by NGO-operated vessels – they are sold. The existence of modern-day slave markets has been known for months, with testimony from the International Organisation for Migration and other humanitarian agencies, but last week CNN obtained video footage of one such auction.  In scenes reminiscent of the 19th century, when the slave trade was rife, auctioneers advertised a group of West African migrants as “big strong boys for farm work.” The auctioneers referred to the migrants in Arabic as “merchandise”. The CNN footage showed buyers bidding for the migrants, who were sold off for as little as $ 400 each. One West African man told the television network: “Sure, I was sold”.  Others recounted how they were beaten by their “owners” as they put to work. Ahmed Metig, the deputy prime minister of the UN-backed Government of National Accord in Tripoli, said the allegations would be investigated. He said he would establish a "commission to investigate these reports in order to apprehend and bring those responsible to justice.” Migrants sit in a detention centre run by the interior ministry of Libya's eastern-based government, in Benghazi Credit: Reuters Alpha Conde, the president of Guinea and chairman of the African Union, where many migrants come from, called for an inquiry and prosecutions relating to what he termed a "despicable trade… from another era". The Senegalese government called the apparent slave market a "blight on the conscience of humanity". The IOM reported the existence of slave markets in April. “The reports of ‘slave markets’ for migrants can be added to a long list of outrages [in Libya],” said Mohammed Abdiker, IOM’s head of operation and emergencies.  “The situation is dire. The more IOM engages inside Libya, the more we learn that it is a vale of tears for all too many migrants.” Migrants who are rescued at sea and brought to Italy have told how they are beaten, tortured and in some cases raped by traffickers in Libya.  Many young women end up as prostitutes on the streets of Italy, with Nigerian girls as young as 13 forced to sell themselves for as little as 10 euros (£8.90) a time, terrified into submission by gang rape and voodoo curses. It is estimated that 80 per cent of Nigerian teenage girls and young women who make it to Italy are forced into the sex trade.

South African farmers convicted of attempted murder for forcing black man into a coffin

South African farmers convicted of attempted murder for forcing black man into a coffin Two white farmers who forced an unemployed black man into a coffin and threatened to kill him have been jailed following a trial that has reignited debate about the legacy of apartheid in South Africa.  William Oosthuizen, 29 and Theo Jackson, 30, were found guilty of forcing Victor Mlotshwa into a coffin and then threatening to douse him with petrol and set him alight. Their leave to appeal was dismissed.  Judge Sheila Mphahlele, said the two men showed “no remorse"  and that she wanted the sentence to send a “harsh” message to those in South Africa who still practiced racism.  "The most appalling act of the accused was to put the complainant in a coffin against his will. Whilst in the coffin they threatened to set it alight. They asked him how he wanted to die – quickly or slowly,” she said, summing up. The two were also found guilty of assaulting the only witness in an attempt to stop him from testifying against them. Jackson, a father of three, was sentenced  to 14 years.  Oosthuizen and Jackson had pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were arrested last year in the small farming town of Middelberg, 100 miles east of Johannesburg.  They claimed they wanted to “teach Mr Mlotshwa a lesson,” after they came across him trying to steal cables on their farm. They also claimed he threatened to kill their families and burn their crops.  Mr Mlotswha reported the farmers to the police only after a 20-second video clip emerged on You Tube and went viral on social media.  Victor Mlotshwa attending the sentence of the two white farmers convicted of attempted murder Credit:  WIKUS DE WET/ AFP In the video Mr Mlotshwa begs for his life as he is pushed into the coffin.   One of the men pushes the lid of the coffin down while the other threatens to put petrol and a snake inside. At least 56 dead as smugglers throw 300 African migrants into Yemen sea

At least 56 dead as smugglers throw 300 African migrants into Yemen seaAt least 56 people have drowned over the past 24 hours, and dozens remain missing, after human traffickers forced 300 African migrants off two Yemen-bound boats and into the sea. Survivors — all Ethiopian and Somali migrants — managed to make their way to Shabwa, a southern province along Yemen’s Arabian Sea coastline, the International Organization for Migration said. The war in Yemen has left over 8,300 people dead and displaced millions since 2015, but the impoverished country continues to draw migrants from the Horn of Africa seeking work in prosperous Gulf countries further north.
