Republican leader tells 'white supremacist garbage' to stay away from Virginia gun rally

Republican leader tells 'white supremacist garbage' to stay away from Virginia gun rallyThe Republican leader in Virginia has told groups planning to spread "white supremacist garbage" at a pro-gun rally on Monday to stay away. Amid fears that violence could erupt with far-right militias joining pro-gun activists in a march on the state capitol in Richmond, Todd Gilbert joined forces with Democrat governor, Ralph Northam, in a plea for peace. The rally has been called to protest against sweeping gun-control measures proposed by Mr Northam's administration. "Lobby Day is a time for people to peacefully assemble and petition their government. It is not a place for hate and violence," Mr Gilbert said in a statement on Saturday. "Any group that comes to Richmond to spread white supremacist garbage, or any other form of hate, violence, or civil unrest isn't welcome here." Fearing that the rally could become a repetition of the riot at Charlottesville, in which one person died, Mr Northam declared a state of emergency last week. Leaders of the "Unite the Right" groups, such as the Pennsylvania Light Foot Militia, who were present at Charlottesville, have said they are planning to go to Richmond. Mr Northam said the state had received credible intelligence that acts of violence were being planned including storming the state's Capitol. The Federal Aviation Administration has imposed temporary flight restrictions above the city. Rally organiser Philip Van Cleave also called for the protests to be peaceful. US 2020 Newsletter (REFERRAL) Virginia has become the political epicentre of the battle over the second amendment which guarantees the right of citizens to bear arms. The Democrats, who control the statehouse for the first time in a generation, are poised to introduce a series of curbs including universal background checks on gun purchases and a ban on military-style assault weapons. Opposition to the measures has seen over 100 municipalities in the state declaring themselves "Second Amendment Sanctuaries" in which the authorities will refuse to enforce the new state laws. Last week Donald Trump gave his support to gun rights groups in the state. "Your 2nd Amendment is under very serious attack in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia he said on Twitter.

Rashida Tlaib deletes tweet falsely blaming Jersey City shooting on 'white supremacy'

Rashida Tlaib deletes tweet falsely blaming Jersey City shooting on 'white supremacy'Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) deleted a tweet Thursday morning in which she falsely credited Tuesday's deadly shooting at a kosher deli in Jersey City, New Jersey to "white supremacy" when in fact, the suspected shooters were reportedly Black Hebrew Israelites.Tlaib deleted the post just minutes after it went up, but not before close observers were able to nab a screenshot. It didn't take long for the tweet to spread among influential political commentators, especially conservatives, like Dinesh D'Souza, who retweeted a post calling out the congresswoman's blunder. The shooting in the Jewish community in Jersey City left six people dead, including a police officer. Investigators say one of the suspects posted anti-Semitic and anti-police sentiment online, noted The Associated Press. Two of the civilian victims, Mindy Ferencz and Moshe Deutsch, were reportedly members of the Orthodox Jewish community in the neighborhood. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop announced on Wednesday that the massacre was a "hate crime" against Jews. Fulop stated there is reason to believe that the deli was a premeditated target, though investigators have not confirmed details about the suspects' motives.Tlaib has yet to comment in response to the called-out deleted tweet.More stories from theweek.com Trump's pathological obsession with being laughed at The most important day of the impeachment inquiry Jerry Falwell Jr.'s false gospel of memes

Ocasio-Cortez condemns 'white supremacist sympathizer' Tucker Carlson

Ocasio-Cortez condemns 'white supremacist sympathizer' Tucker CarlsonTop Democrat says host’s Fox News show an ‘hour-long production of unmitigated racism’ after racist and xenophobic debateDemocratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has condemned Fox News and Tucker Carlson, calling the TV host a “white supremacist sympathizer” and saying his show represents an “hour-long production of unmitigated racism”.The comments came following a segment on Carlson’s show in which he and his guest, City Journal editor Seth Barron, commented on footage of an unremarkable amount of trash on the streets of Ocasio-Cortez’s New York City district and blamed it on immigrants, whom Barron said had “occupied” the district and made it “one of the least American districts in the country”.Carlson asked: “How can we take seriously anything she says about the environment when this is her congressional district? She should be ashamed of this.”Using racist and xenophobic tropes, Barron responded that “her district is actually one of the least American districts in the country, and by that, I don’t mean that it’s not part of America, but it’s occupied by relatively few American citizens.”He went on: “The way they inhabit housing there is such that they live in a lot of illegal spaces like basements, and many people live there, so they wind up producing a lot of garbage that the landlords don’t want thrown out normally. Hence, you wind up with a lot of garbage on the streets. You have illegal food vendors pouring their pig grease in the gutters.”It was unclear where he was getting this information from.Carlson and his guests, much like the president, frequently imply that immigrants are making the country “poorer and dirtier”.Carlson has called the idea of white supremacy in America a hoax.On Wednesday night on Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez shared video of the segment and wrote: “I go back and forth on whether to go on Fox News.”She said: “The main reason I haven’t is squaring the fact that the ad revenue from it bankrolls a white supremacist sympathizer to broadcast an hour-long production of unmitigated racism, without any accountability whatsoever.”She added: “‘Immigrants are dirty’ is a lazy, tired, racist trope.”Barron later apologized on Twitter, saying he had not done “justice to a complicated issue” of crowded housing conditions.

'White terror': Hong Kong's China critics beaten in targeted attacks

'White terror': Hong Kong's China critics beaten in targeted attacksThe men jumped Stanley Ho without warning, smashing both his hands with metal rods — one of multiple recent attacks against prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy figures that activists have dubbed a “white terror”. Since late August, eight well-known pro-democracy figures have been beaten by unknown assailants as fear swirls that some “triad” crime networks have flocked to Beijing’s cause after five months of protests. “The cause of the attack may be related to two things — the upcoming district council election and the ongoing movement,” Ho told AFP, referring to the protests.

Business class passenger on BA flight racially abused stewardess because he wanted 'white girl' to serve him, court hears

Business class passenger on BA flight racially abused stewardess because he wanted 'white girl' to serve him, court hearsA business class passenger allegedly racially abused a stewardess on board a British Airways flight, demanding that he be served by a "white girl," a court has heard. Peter Nelson, 46, became irate after being woken up by Sima Patel-Pryke while flying business class on a 11-and-a-half hour BA flight from Heathrow to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, jurors were told. The "red-faced" married dad-of-three allegedly said: "You Asians think you are better than us, I don't want to be served by you lot, I've paid your wages for the last 20 years." Isleworth Crown Court heard Nelson, who lives in a £1.15 million five-bed detached house in Ascot, Berks, reduced the stewardess to tears after he "shouted very loudly" at her and another cabin crew member, Sam Buchanan, in the jet's galley. Nelson, who has been an external consultant for GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company in the UK for nearly 20 years, allegedly "targeted" Ms Patel-Pryke before he was threatened with arrest. Cabin crew got a restraining kit ready to use on him, the jury was told. He was flying from the UK to Brazil  Credit: SWNS Michael Tanney, prosecuting, said: "It's no mere mischief to say he bullied and ranted and shouted. "At one point, after a sustained targeting of her, she begins to back away in fright and became tearful." Citing Mr Buchanan's evidence, he said: "Nelson subsequently demanded services in the future only from the white member of the new. "He accused the defendant of shouting very loudly to add to the menace that he was exuding. All deliberate say the crown. That was when the white girl reference was allegedly made." Mr Tanney added: "It's no trifling complaint that one has misbehaved on an aeroplane at 3,000ft to the extent that a restraining kit has been made ready." Mr Tanney said Nelson's claims that he never used "racist language" were a "conspiracy theory". Lauren Sales, defending, said: "Mr Nelson accepts he was tired, petulant, churlish. "He said, 'He didn't want that one serving him, he wanted another one' – maybe words that you and I might not use to speak to cabin crew, but certainly not racist. "The prosecution put it to Mr Nelson, 'oh, you were drunk – that's why you acted in this way,' but we know not a single one of the prosecution witnesses said Mr Nelson was slurring. They did say he had the boozy breath. "It wasn't white one, it was as Mr Nelson explained, he only wanted to be served by 'her'." Nelson denies one count of racially aggravated abuse on the flight on June 2 last year. The trial continues.
