Religious Exemptions to Government Health Care Mandate Equal Bad Medicine

COMMENTARY | 2014 begins with a continued debate on the Affordable Care Act and coverage of birth control pills. Although the Obama Administration allows for religious-based organizations to be exempt from mandatory coverage of birth control pills, one Catholic group remains unsatisfied with this generous legal exception. By doing so, their attorney argued, they would be authorizing a third party to “sin on their behalf,” meaning the burden of birth control coverage would fall on insurance companies. On New Year’s Eve, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor even granted a last-minute injunction on behalf of the Little Sisters of the Poor until their case is settled, either by the U.S. Supreme Court or a lower court ruling.
